Your Voice Matters: Engage With Our Annual Culture and Climate Survey!
As we gear up for another round of our annual engagement survey, I want to take a moment to stress the importance of your participation. Your feedback plays a crucial role in shaping our workplace culture and driving positive change within the organization.
For the past eight years, we have entrusted the National Business Research Institute (NBRI) as our third-party vendor to conduct these surveys. Their commitment to confidentiality ensures that your responses remain anonymous and are securely held. Only de-identified data is shared with us, guaranteeing your privacy and encouraging candid feedback.
Your authentic responses are invaluable. They provide us with insights into what is working well and where we have opportunities for improvement. Whether it's recognizing areas of strength or addressing areas that need attention, your input directly influences our actions and initiatives moving forward.
It's important to note that this survey is not just a formality; it's a powerful tool for driving positive change. Your perspectives help us better understand the experiences of our employees and create a more supportive and inclusive workplace for everyone.
So, I encourage each and every one of you to take the time to complete the upcoming engagement survey. Your voice matters, and your feedback is instrumental in shaping the future of our company. Together, we can continue to foster a culture where every employee feels valued, heard, and empowered. Please be on the lookout for an email from flagstaffusd@nbriresearch.com in the coming weeks to engage in the 2023-2024 Culture and Climate Survey.

Empowering Change: District Negotiations Committee
We are thrilled to spotlight the incredible achievements of our District Negotiations Committee, a dedicated team committed to ensuring fair and equitable working conditions for all stakeholders. Tasked with reviewing and recommending adjustments related to compensation, district-paid benefits, and pertinent policies and regulations, this committee plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our organization.
Comprising representatives from four key groups - classified employees, certified/licensed professionals, site administrators, and district/ancillary staff - the District Negotiations Committee embodies diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and considered.
Since fiscal year 2019, the committee's efforts have yielded substantial gains for our workforce. Moreover, the committee has championed initiatives such as retention payments totaling $2,500, reduced rate increases for benefits, and the establishment of a starting wage of $18.00 for classified employees, coupled with comprehensive reclassifications of job roles. These measures not only acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our staff but also underscore our commitment to attracting and retaining top talent.
In addition to these tangible improvements, the District Negotiations Committee has spearheaded revisions to all staff policies, which came into effect on July 1, 2023. Embracing Diversity: Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Committee
FUSD Diversity Statement - The Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) values the diversity of our community, staff, and students and is committed to equity, inclusion, dignity, and respect for all. We believe that to be prepared for today’s global society and workforce students and staff must be able to understand, appreciate, work with, and learn from people with cultures and backgrounds different from their own.
The Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee at FUSD embodies our commitment to equity, inclusion, dignity, and respect for all. Rooted in our belief that embracing diversity enriches our community and prepares students and staff for success in today's global society, the committee works tirelessly to foster an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered. Through advocacy, education, and collaborative initiatives, the JEDI Committee strives to create a culture of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to our shared goals.
Throughout the past year, the JEDI Committee has dedicated its efforts to fostering a more inclusive learning environment for adult learners centered around Feedback, Appreciation of Differences, Sense of Belonging, and Inclusive Environments. By prioritizing feedback mechanisms within the learning environment, the committee has ensured that the voices of staff from diverse backgrounds are heard and valued, thus fostering a culture of openness and continuous improvement. Additionally, through targeted initiatives aimed at promoting an appreciation of differences in learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and individual needs, the committee has worked to create an environment where every learner feels acknowledged and supported. Moreover, by emphasizing the importance of cultivating a sense of belonging and fostering inclusive spaces, the committee has strived to create an educational environment where all staff feel welcomed, respected, and empowered to thrive. Through their unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit, the JEDI Committee continues to make significant strides towards creating a more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive educational community for all.

Shaping Our School Year: The Impact of the Calendar Committee
The Flagstaff Unified School District's Calendar Committee has been hard at work, ensuring that our school year aligns with the needs and priorities of our students, parents, and staff. This dedicated group of individuals has undertaken the crucial task of evaluating various aspects of our academic calendar, aiming to enhance the educational experience for all.
One significant recommendation put forth by the Calendar Committee was the implementation of a single early release day. Recognizing the importance of providing educators with dedicated time for professional development and collaboration, the committee proposed this initiative to support ongoing growth and innovation within our schools.
Furthermore, the committee addressed the scheduling of parent-teacher conferences, recognizing the importance of fostering strong home-school partnerships. By recommending adjustments to conference times, they aim to ensure that these vital meetings are convenient and accessible for both parents and educators, fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration to support student success.
In addition, the Calendar Committee has explored the possibility of implementing a later start for secondary students. Understanding the unique needs and rhythms of adolescent learners, they have sought to create a schedule that maximizes student engagement and well-being, while also accommodating the diverse needs of families and staff members.
The recommendations put forth by the Calendar Committee underscore their commitment to enhancing the educational experience for all members of our school community. Through thoughtful consideration and collaboration, they continue to play a pivotal role in shaping our school calendar to better meet the needs of our students, families, and staff.
As we move forward, we extend our gratitude to the members of the Calendar Committee for their dedication, expertise, and tireless efforts in advancing our shared goals of academic excellence and student success.
Enriching Digital Education: The Digital Learning Resource Committee
In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, protecting our students' safety and privacy in their online educational journeys is essential. In response, FUSD has created a Digital Learning Resource Committee. This committee comprises a diverse group of stakeholders from around the district.
Countless digital educational tools exist for student use, presenting a challenge for teachers in selecting the most suitable option. Our committee rigorously evaluates each digital tool to ensure it protects student data privacy, meets accessibility standards, and corresponds with our curriculum objectives. This approach ensures that our students benefit from the safest, most efficient, and top-quality educational technologies.
FUSD has partnered with a pilot program from the ADE and the non-profit 1EdTech to gain access to the TrustEd Apps Management platform to assist in vetting the data privacy aspect of digital resources.
By including staff from a variety of departments and school levels, we ensure that diverse voices are heard and that the decision-making does not solely fall upon the Technology Department. The process is collaborative and focused.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the committee vetted numerous digital resources, discussed the district's new AI guidance document, and identified that the district needed better tools for teacher-to-parent communication.
