Weekly Update

March 29th, 2024
Sources of Strength
This month the BHS chapter of Sources of Strength relaunched! Sources of Strength (SOS) is a nationally recognized club focusing on suicide prevention through increaseing student’s connections to their strengths and networks of support. The goal of Sources of Strength is “to prevent adverse outcomes by increasing wellbeing, help-seeking, resiliency, healthy coping, and belonging. Sources of Strength moves beyond a singular focus on risk factors by utilizing an upstream approach for youth suicide prevention. This upstream model strengthens multiple sources of support, or protective factors, for young people so that when times get hard, they have strengths to rely on.” SOS engages students in discussing their 8 sources of strength: family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, physical health, and mental health.
This year our adult advisors are Nick Bedard, SRO; Meredith Vogel, LCSW, General Education Social Worker; Geno Ring, Substance Use Counselor; April Doane, SEB Teacher; Kelly Welch, Science Teacher; and Alan Molnar, Long Term Substitute Teacher. So far the BHS SOS chapter has about 25 students! In the beginning of March we had a Peer Leader Training where the new SOS student leaders came together to learn about the goal of the club, brainstorm campaigns, and play team building games. We are so excited to have more student’s join us as we work to destigmatize talking about mental health needs and engage with students about their Sources of Strengths!
To learn more about the Sources of Strength program you can check out their website: https://sourcesofstrength.org/about/ or follow the BHS Chapter on Instagram to stay up to date on what campaign’s the club is organizing this year!
If you are concerned about your student, and would like to speak to someone at school, please reach out to their school counselor: Mary Moore (R10, OCLC, ESOL), Diane Cook (A-F), Scott Bradley (G-N), Christina Ring (O-Z). You can also reach out to Meredith Vogel (general education social worker) or Mary Kunhardt (special education social worker).

Solar Eclipse Viewing Opportunity for Students
If you didn't already hear, there will be a total solar eclipse passing through Maine on Monday, April 8 around 3:30 pm! Although Brunswick is not in the path of totality, we will get a magnitude of ~97% which is still pretty dang cool. We will be hosting a viewing party after school here at BHS to watch it safely. If your student is interested in attending, please fill out this google form so that we can make sure we have enough glasses. Email Mrs. Kait Ostrov if you have any questions.
Eclipse Safety: The sun will not appear as bright during the eclipse but that does not mean that it will be any less harmful if you stare at it! We do not have pain receptors on our retinas so without protective eyewear, you run the risk of permanent damage to your retina and cone/rod cells. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the sun; make sure your solar eclipse glasses comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Check out Total Solar Eclipse Safety from NASA to learn more.

UNE Field Trip with Ms. King's & Ms. Marion's Classes
On Wednesday, March 27th 42 BHS students from Ms. King's Human Anatomy and Physiology classes and Ms. Marion's AP Bio class had the opportunity to visit the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. The group worked with seven volunteer medical students who talked about the UNE Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program, body donation at UNE, and then took students into an anatomy lab. Students worked at three stations where they learned about the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and skeletal systems. They were able to hold and examine a human brain, spinal cord, heart, lungs, and knee joint of a person who had a complete knee replacement. They also participated in a case study reviewing the chart of a patient with an ACL tear. No photos were allowed in the lab but you can see the group in the photos here.
Skeletal System Work in Ms. Kings Class
Ms. King's Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology class has been working on the skeletal system. They observed human bone under the microscope, examined the structure of a long bone by looking at cow bones, and learned about the 206 bones of the human body using an articulated and disarticulated skeleton. One of the highlights of the unit is putting together the disarticulated skeleton alongside the articulated skeleton
Brunswick HS Students Celebrate Women's History Month!
During their flex classes, students at Brunswick HS learned about amazing women in history through an interactive quilt making project. A big thanks to Sarah Campbell for putting it together!
Genes in Space Loan Program
This week, BHS Biology teacher Jess Marion received miniPCR materials from the Lab in a Box equipment loan program by Genes in Space. Her classes will soon be solving a food safety in space mystery scenario using biotech methods such as PCR, restriction enzyme digest, and gel electrophoresis to amplify bacterial DNA in order to identify disease-causing strains. She applied to participate in the lab program, but there are additional opportunities for all students to enter a competition to have their own experiments performed on the International Space Station.
From the Science Department
A huge congratulations to Avery Lundgren, Tessa Couture, Madison Favreau, and Ilsa Tucker who participated in the 2024 Maine State Science Fair this past Saturday. These students worked incredibly hard and did a tremendous job researching, collecting data, and then presenting their findings. A huge shout-out to faculty advisors Susan Perkins and Kelly Welch for all their help in making these projects happen. Way to go!

Naviance How To
All students have access to this resource that BHS uses for a variety of purposes in the process of investigating career paths and post secondary education options. If students have not yet accessed their Naviance account, they should be doing this in Flex (juniors will be getting passwords next week, in the event your student hasn’t logged in yet).
All students can take a variety of surveys to investigate areas of interest and career pathways and eventually start their list of potential colleges to apply to as seniors.
How to access Naviance:
Naviance can be used to help explore careers and college options/searches. In grade 12 Naviance is used (as a data management tool) to send out all materials from BHS for college applications - including transcripts and letters of recommendation.
1. Go to the BHS Website
2. Select Explore on the top right of the page.
3. Under the Student Column, there is Naviance listed.
4. Type in 04011 for the zip code and select Brunswick High School
5. Usernames are the prefix of emails for BHS (do not include the @portion)
6. Passwords should have been set in Flex or when meeting with school counselors for grades 9 and 10, grade 11 students may have them now or will get them next week.
Where to start?--- Go to Self- Discovery (at top) Complete the surveys!
Reminder - Seniors
Seniors-- you should be indicating in Naviance the responses you are receiving from colleges (acceptances) along with the school you plan on attending (once you know). Check with your counselor if you aren’t sure how to do this.
