Message from the Principal
Major Changes In High School Graduation Requirements Closer to Becoming Law
Graduation requirements in Oklahoma have not changed in decades. Legislation that would dramatically change those requirements are moving closer to becoming law (see article linked below). Although these changes would NOT impact current students in high school, they do reflect the changes that are transforming how high schools serve their students. These changes would provide school districts the flexibility to create graduation pathways that provide students more flexibility and choice in the learning pathway they choose. Proponents of the new legislation believe it will modernize requirements and eliminate course requirements that aren't relevant to some students. Opponents of the legislation express concern for the elimination of mandatory fine arts and technology or world language courses for all students.
Currently there are two graduation pathways for students: College/Career Prep or Core Curriculum. Most students graduate with a College/Career Prep diploma which provides a mostly one-size fits all pathway for students. Although students do have options with electives, they are required to take certain elective classes and there is little flexibility for districts to create pathways to a diploma that align with student interests. Anyone who attended school remembers having to take required classes in which they lacked much interest. This new legislation will allow districts to create pathways that better match student career interests. The proposed legislation moves to the floor of the State Legislature this week and is likely on it's way to becoming law. These new pathways would first apply to the Class of 2030 (7th graders in 24-25).
I'm enthusiastic about these potential changes although I do share the concerns of those that this approach could eliminate fine arts and world languages as required courses. However, I believe we have to provide students and parents more choice when selecting graduation pathways. For example, students who attend Career Tech are limited in their course selection options due to required courses that take up available hours. Students are often bored in courses in which they lack interest or that they don't find relevant. As a result they tend to dislike school and perform poorly. Students and parents should have more choice and flexibility when charting their pathway to future success.
Much of this initiative to change graduation requirements are part of the ICAP (Individual Career Academic Plan) that is now required of all students. The class of 22-23 was the first class to graduation with an ICAP as part of their diploma. ICAP's begin in junior high and help students establish goals, take career interest surveys, learn soft skills such as resume-building, and eventually align their course pathways with their career interest. High School should serve as a springboard to future economic success. Students should gain the knowledge and skills that will help them find a path to financial success. Our community needs future workers with the necessary skills and knowledge. The modern workforce demands more specific skills than the jobs of the industrial age. A traditional high school diploma is no longer enough to serve our students.
Schools must continue to evolve and meet the needs of their communities. Parents and students seek more choice in terms of courses taken and their overall school schedule. The days of sitting in classrooms from 8:00-3:00 everyday are over. That schedule is not efficient and not aligned to the modern world. Students and parents are increasingly seeking a school schedule that provides more flexibility and choice. We will continue to provide those opportunities through our Alternative Education School and Concurrent, PAVE Virtual & Hybrid, Internships, & Work Experience Programs. Students next year will have the option to enroll in Virtual elective classes that are self-paced and don't require sitting in classrooms for an hour each day of the week.
Flexibility and choice will provide our students more options and help many of our students stay better engaged in school. Providing students more control over their own pathway will help many students better connect to school!

OU MODERN STATES INITIATIVE PROVIDES JUNIORS & SENIORS ACCESS TO FREE COLLEGE CREDIT DURING SCHOOL DAY
This week I shared with parents of current sophomores and juniors this exciting new opportunity for students. Please take the opportunity to read about the initiative below and contact me directly through email or phone to sign your student up for this potential opportunity. This is open to all current sophs and juniors who are planning on attending college and are in good academic standing.
Jason Sanders

This initiative will allow Oklahoma’s high school students to earn college credit during the school day at no cost. Funding for the initiative comes from Steven and Maureen Klinsky and the Carnegie Corporation - this opportunity comes at no cost to the student or the district!
For this initiative, high school juniors and seniors take courses online within the school day or on distance learning days. After students complete course content and pass a practice exam, they take the official College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test. Modern States provides all online courses and vouchers for students to take CLEP tests for free. There is no cost to districts or to the students who participate.
How would this initiative work in your district?
This spring, the OU Thrive Center will identify high school students interested in taking Modern States classes in fall of 2024/spring, 2025. Typically, eligible students are those who are on track academically (e.g., minimum 2.75 GPA). For the fall term, we set aside a class period within the school day (or distance learning day) for 11th and 12th grade students to take Modern States’ classes. From the pool of interested students, OU Thrive will randomly assign a portion of students to take classes via Modern States. The other students will be assigned to whatever class/study hall they were planning to do. We will compare the outcomes in these two student groups to test how well Modern States is serving your students.
What are the benefits for your district?
High school students will have an opportunity to earn college credit at no cost. If you find that the initiative works well within the district, OU Thrive will work with you to expand and deliver courses to your students. Our main interest is to study the effects of Modern States under a credible research design.
How will OU Thrive evaluate the initiative?
They will use a randomized controlled trial design that will generate causal estimates on the effects of Modern States on participating students. They will examine attendance, GPA, college credits earned, high school credits earned, course completions, and the overall cost-benefits relative to other college access options that students in your district use.

Purcell Public Schools Awarded $3 Million FEMA Grant for Community Shelter at Purcell Junior High.
Purcell, Oklahoma – April 16, 2024 – Purcell Public Schools is pleased to announce a FEMA grant award of $3,044,447.13 to construct a new community shelter in the form of a gymnasium at Purcell Junior High School.
This grant was awarded through a competitive process based on a special FEMA program that provides 90% reimbursement of eligible building costs for approved community shelter projects. Purcell Public Schools will contribute the remaining 10% of the basic project cost of $338,271.90. The District has planned to add amenities to the gymnasium to make it competition-ready, such as wood flooring, bleachers, dressing rooms, and a concession area. This will increase the District's cost but will yield an area that will provide far-reaching benefits.
“We are incredibly grateful for this FEMA grant,” said Dr. Sheli McAdoo, Superintendent of Purcell Public Schools. “This new gymnasium will not only serve as a valuable educational resource for our students, but it will also function as a safe haven for our community during times of disaster.”
The new gymnasium will be designed to meet FEMA’s strict criteria for community shelters, ensuring it can withstand severe weather events and provide critical amenities to residents in need.

SAFETY REPORT: Safety Reminders / End of Year Pranks are Bad Ideas!
Parents: Please emphasize to your students who drive to practice safe driving habits at ALL times. Our students overall do a good job of driving safely and adhering to traffic laws. However I do receive regular reports of unsafe driving habits including road racing and recently a student hanging out the window of the car. These incidents took place off campus and are not under school jurisdiction. However, I have the authority to remove driving privileges if it's determined that students are not following traffic laws to and from school. We will always work with local law enforcement to follow up on all such reports. We want our students to be safe both on and off campus!
Also discuss with your students the need to finish school strong and avoid making bad decisions as the end of year approaches. What may seem like a harmless prank can result in significant consequences for students. Any behavior that creates an unsafe situation or disrupts classroom learning will result in significant consequences including suspensions. Stay Safe & Make Smart Decisions!

OKLAHOMA MATH TUTORING CORP IS NOW OPEN (GREAT RESOURCE!)
Registration is now open for the Oklahoma Math Tutoring Corps (OMTC) for the 2023-24 school year. This high-dosage tutoring program is available for Oklahoma students in grades 7, 8 and 9, providing 50-minute virtual tutoring sessions three times a week in groups of no more than four students.
Along with feedback from students and families, 78% of 7th and 8th grade students who participated during the 2022-23 school year had 2023 assessment scores within the same performance level as in 2022 or improved a performance level. Remaining at the same performance level is considered growth as the state’s academic standards increase in complexity each grade level. Please note, 9th grade does not have a state assessment, so we do not have testing information on them.
OSDE’s Math Tutoring Corps will host two sessions during the 2023-24 school year. The first runs September 17 through November 18, and the second in Spring 2024. Each session can accommodate up to 1,500 students and students are eligible to participate in one or both of the sessions. Families and students can register through this link. The OSDE will provide any needed technology or internet access, and tutoring schedules will occur during students’ free time outside of the school day.
