Apr 29-May 3: NJSLA Assessments - ½ daysCommunity Service Project, March 28
Thank you to all who contributed to our community service project. We were able to put together approximately 525 bagged lunches for TASK. Our students worked for most of the day until we exhausted our supply of donations, so some of the classes late in the day may not have actually put together bagged lunches, but they contributed in other ways.
While many of us, myself included, have plans to spend with family and friends with no concern where our next meal will come from, it is good to remember that is not the case for all. Our efforts as a school helped, in our own small way, with supporting those in need.

Month of the Military Child
When we return from break, it will be April and that is the Month of the Military Child. It recognizes the unique challenges faced by children who grow up in families whose parents serve in our nation’s armed forces. Among the activities we are holding throughout the month include having students from military families lead our school in our daily Pledge of Allegiance. In addition, since purple is the color of the military child, we invite all of our students to wear purple on Thursdays throughout the month of April.
Day of Silence
The middle school GSA will be holding their annual Day of Silence event during school on Friday, April 12th. The Day of Silence is a national student-led event that happens in April of every year. Students who voluntarily choose to participate remain silent for the day to raise awareness of the harassment and bullying that LGBTQ+ students face in schools across the country and the world. The event is for students only. Those who wish to participate should listen to announcements for information about how to sign up. The following week the GSA is encouraging everyone to wear bright colors to “break the silence.” Students who choose to participate should listen to the announcements for the color theme for each day.

Clinical Corner
With Spring break upon us, I thought it might be helpful to discuss school refusal/avoidance because a break in the routine or extra days off can exacerbate this issue. And this is small compared to how COVID-19 certainly affected it. According to the article School refusal: Children and Adolescents, school refusal is defined as when “children get extremely upset at the idea of going to school and often miss some or all of the school day.” As more days are missed, the harder it is for the student to feel as if they can return.
Here are some signs of school refusal:
Crying, tantrums
Refusing to move
Beg or plead not to go
Hide or lock themselves in their room
Show high levels of anxiety
Have trouble sleeping
Threaten to hurt themselves
As the article states, there is not usually a single cause of school refusal “It might be linked to anxiety or worries about leaving home,a recent change, a phobia, learning difficulties, social problems or depression.” But whatever the cause, avoidance/refusal works for the student because they are able to avoid the stressor or if they are worried about something at home it keeps them close by. In the next Clinical Corner will discuss strategies for school refusal/avoidance.
