EHS and EMS students attend mental health and substance abuse presentation
USD 490 middle and high school students attended a substance abuse and mental health presentation by Tony Hoffman on Feb. 14, 2024. Middle school students and the community were invited to a morning presentation and high school students attended an afternoon presentation.

EHS eSports begins competing against other schools
El Dorado High School’s eSports team began competing against other schools this semester. Last year, the eSports club played against each other and worked on gaming skills, but did not compete against other schools.
Grandview speller places third at county bee
Congratulations to Blake Dunbar, Grandview fourth grade student, for winning third place in the Butler County Spelling Bee on Feb. 2.

Skelly PE students participate in Jump Rope Ninja
Skelly students wrapped up their Jump Rope Ninja unit in PE on Jan. 31. They earned "belts" for jumping designated amounts without stopping or making a mistake. There were nine levels for students to climb, with only a couple dozen students making it all the way to the ultimate black belt status.

EHS hosts regional KAY conference
El Dorado High School Kansas Association of Youth (KAY) members hosted the Area 6 regional KAY conference on January 29. The annual conference was an opportunity for high school KAY students from neighboring districts to meet and participate in team-building and service activities.

USD 490 student art featured at Coutts Museum of Art
USD 490 elementary and middle school students will have art exhibited at the Coutts Museum of Art’s 30th Annual Butler County K-8 Student Art Show from Feb. 10 through Mar. 23, 2024.

EMS students participate in honor band and orchestra
Five El Dorado Middle School sixth grade orchestra students performed in the beginners' orchestra at the 2024 Southern Plains Honor Orchestra Festival on Saturday, February 10 at Andover Central High School. Nine seventh and eighth grade orchestra students performed in the advanced orchestra and several students participated in the honor bands.

EMS girls wrestlers named League Champs
The El Dorado Middle School girls wrestling team was named Patriot League Champions at the meet in El Dorado on Feb. 20, 2024.
This is the first season for girls wrestling at EMS, and the third time this year the female athletes at EMS have brought home a Leage Championship. The other two girls teams to earn the title this year were volleyball and basketball.

EHS wrestlers place at regionals and state
Two El Dorado High School girls wrestlers placed at the state competition in Salina on Feb. 22-24. Trinity Motter placed third and Cheyenne Jones placed fourth.
Hannah Gantz, Kegan Motter, and Aryana Vance also competed at state on the girls team and Gunner Owens competed at state on the boys team.
Five El Dorado High School girls wrestlers placed at the regional competition on Feb. 10. The team placed third overall. Kegan Motter and Cheyenne Jones placed second. Trinity Motter, Aryana Vance, and Hannah Gantz placed fourth.
El Dorado High School's boys wrestling team competed at regionals in Andale Feb. 16-17. Gunner Owens placed second in the 175 weight class, qualifying to compete at state. Overall the team placed 12. Beau Hall placed fourth (138) and EJ Krug placed seventh (150).
Other boys team members who competed at regionals include: Allen Bishop, Jackson Lea, Bryson Karst, Landon Pickney, Tucker Reed, and Jaxson Markowitz.
EHS boys swimmer competes at state
El Dorado High School swimmer Brody Todd placed 22 in the 100 and 200 freestyle events at the state boys swimming competition in Topeka on Feb. 15-17.

EMS student wins state Elks Hoop Shoot contest
El Dorado Middle School student Nash Nesmith won the county, regional, and state Elks Hoop Shoot contests. He made 21 out of 25 free throws at the state competition and will advance to the Region 8 (CO, KS, NE, WY) semi-finals in Colorado Springs on Mar. 16.
EHS student elected Vice President of Membership for regional FCCLA
El Dorado High School junior Chance Fields was elected Vice President of Membership for FCCLA District I at their annual competition day Feb. 7 in Wichita.
EHS homecoming royalty candidates spend time with community
El Dorado High School's winter homecoming royalty candidates visited Homestead Senior Living on Feb. 13 and Blackmore Elementary kindergarten and first grade students on Feb. 14.
EMS students make candy to learn about chemical and physical changes
On Feb. 12, middle school students had a hands-on experience visually learning about the difference between physical and chemical changes by making rock candy!
From observing the sugar crystals forming to understanding the chemical reactions taking place, our students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of chemistry. Through this engaging activity, they not only satisfied their sweet tooth but also gained valuable insights into the principles of matter transformation.
Alumni and local artist Jim Clements recognized as Friend of Education
The USD 490 Board of Education recognized EHS alumni and local artist Jim Clements as a Friend of Education for all of his work with USD 490 elementary students and elementary Art Teacher Ira Bane over the last couple of years.
Elementary teachers receive grants from Security Benefit
Congratulations to Grandview Fourth Grade Teacher Jim Shum and Blackmore Early Childhood Teacher Cristin Hubbard on winning $100 grants from Security Benefit!
EMS teacher Drew Carney recognized at KEEN conference
EMS Weights Teacher Drew Carney was recognized for being named a Kansas Horizon Award winner at a Kansas Department of Education luncheon during the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference on Feb. 23, 2024. He was one of only 32 award recipients from across the state.
Blackmore student council cleans up playground
Each month the Blackmore Student Council selects a service project to benefit their school and/or community, based on feedback from other student leaders. On Feb. 27, 2024, they had a playground clean-up day where they raked the rubber chips back where they are supposed to be.
