Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental health is an overarching term that includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, act, feel, interact with others, and how we learn. Studies show that providing education for young people on wellness and maintaining positive mental health, in addition to curriculum on mental illness, contributes to their positive mental health.
AACPS provides mental health services through Student Services, including Psychological Services, Pupil Personnel Workers, School Counseling, and Section 504. In addition to Student Services, the AACPS Wellness Council "values wellness for its students, employees and community and believes that their well-being will ultimately enhance the learning process for all."
In partnership with community organizations, AACPS staff and students are promoting wellness and positive mental health throughout the month of May. Get involved in promoting positive mental health this month!

Family Engagement Tip of the Month
May is Better Sleep Month
Sleep affects all systems of our bodies, including both mental and physical health, as well as our ability to learn. Ensuring our children get good sleep is one way we can support them in school success.
How does sleep affect my child in school?
Sleep helps strengthen memories you’ve formed throughout the day, including new material learned in school.
Without proper sleep, a child’s ability to learn can drop by up to 40%.
Sleep deprivation affects our ability to focus and use the information presented to us.
What can I do to promote healthy sleep at home?
Continue a bedtime routine. While that routine will change as they grow older, having regular activities helps set the body up for proper sleep.
Implement a screen curfew. The blue light that emits from our devices suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps us fall asleep and stay asleep.
Exercise. Physical activity promotes healthy sleep for people of all ages. Try to conclude vigorous physical activity at least two hours before bedtime.
Determine how much sleep your child needs, and work back from their morning wake up time to choose a bedtime.
