News from Dr. Holcomb
Where has the time gone?! We have been busy gearing up for parent/teacher conferences and are excited to meet with you to share more about how your Bears are doing. The district expectation is that we have 100% attendance for parent/teacher conferences so we will continue to reach out if you have not been able to schedule a time to meet with your child's teacher.
We have a LOT of things coming up in the near future: Kindergarten Registration, a Title Math event, ISASPs, field trips, our last music program, etc. It will be a busy spring for sure.
Please remember that you must park in the parking lot if you plan to leave your vehicle to go get your child from their classroom teacher after school. Everyone in the two lines of traffic need to remain in their cars in order for us to get everyone dismissed as efficiently and as safely as possible. Please also remember to do your best to accommodate the busses who are picking up some of our most fragile students.
This month during our Character Strong time, grade levels are learning about Cooperation. The various grade levels will be focusing on the following:
Kindergarten--students will practice their listening skills as they cooperate to pass along a secret message; they will put cooperation skills like communication and attention into practice in a ball-toss challenge; students will cooperate in teams to complete a scavenger hunt; and students will use cooperation skills and serve in specific group roles in order to create a paper chain as a team.
1st grade--students will work cooperatively to help each other create a story from an image; students will practice cooperation by focusing on communication skills such as giving clear instructions and listening; students will cooperate in a way that helps others achieve a common goal; and students will practice the communication skills needed to cooperate with others.
2nd grade--students will practice cooperation skills like sharing ideas and taking turns while drawing collaboratively; will cooperate to create music using different sounds; will cooperate while working with a classmates to create a new animal; and will create a chain to showcase their individual strengths.
3rd grade--students will look at other people's perspectives and practice respectful, persuasive communication skills; will cooperate and share their perspectives to create a picture and story to go with it; will practice cooperation by completing challenges to get from point A to point B; and will cooperate with one another in order to help their teammates guess hidden words.
4th grade--students will cooperate and apply conflict resolution strategies to complete a challenge as a team; will work in groups to complete a short skit about cooperation using I-statements to resolve conflict; will work cooperatively to create a flag representing each group member as well as something they have in common; and will work cooperatively to answer questions during an interactive game resolving conflicts.
5th grade--students will work in groups to create a profile of a leader showcasing what a true leader looks like; will collaborate to lead others through positive resolutions to potential conflicts; and will cooperate to create recess activities for a younger grade level.
Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education.

Coming Soon: Conditions for Learning Survey
All Iowa public school districts are required to administer an annual school climate and culture survey to students in grades 3-12 called Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey is designed to measure their engagement in school, safety, and the overall learning environment. The survey will be administered to students in April.
Parents and families of students in preschool through grade 12 will also have the opportunity to participate in the Parent Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey contains similar items to those on the student survey, focusing on areas that range from student safety and positive adult and student relationships to school rules and how they are enforced. Participation in the survey is encouraged, but it is completely voluntary, and all questions are optional to answer.
Please watch your email for more information on the survey.
