Quilt Block Canvas

Want to learn more about quilting, but a little nervous about tackling a large-scale quilting project? This take-home kit is a great opportunity to begin practicing with quilt blocks. Each kit will provide a block shape at random and you will be able to create a quilt design onto a canvas.

I Spy Bottles

I Spy is a favorite game to play amongst youth on long car rides or even through books. This kit, takes it to a new level. Youth can create their own I Spy bottle which can include various trinkets for youth to find. Bottles can be entered into fair through the Youth Development projects and can be tailored to the interest of the youth.

As Clover Kids, youth can explore various areas of interest, which may help guide them into future projects as a 4-H member. Throughout this workshop, we will create a variety of projects that span different 4-H project areas to give youth an opportunity to explore. This workshop is different than other workshops as we are offering 2 opportunities. The sessions will be the same, but you can choose a time that works best for your family.

4-H Workshops
Quilted or Embroidered Hats

Today's fashion really speaks to the art of personalization. Why pay for customized detail when you can do it yourself! Join us for a workshop tailored to your interest. Options include a quilt block beanie or an embroidered ball cap. Workshops will take place at the same time, so you will only be able to choose one option. Space will be limited per option; this workshop is in conjunction with Polk County, so space will also be limited for our county youth.
Quilted Beanies: Youth will learn how to sew a basic quilt block before adhering to their beanie.
Embroidered Hat: Youth can pick their own design to stitch onto a ball cap using embroidery techniques.
Youth will be responsible for bringing their own beanie or ball cap.

Bead Looming

Bead Looming is an older technique of weaving utilizing glass seed beads. Your imagination is the limit when creating designs and utilizing color to create beautiful pieces. During this workshop, we will learn the basics: equipment, materials, and skills, that can be used later to create larger, more elaborate pieces. Through this workshop, you will create a bracelet, but you get to keep your loom and create other items such as earrings, belts, and more!

DIY Pom-Pom Art
Time: 1:00 to 4:00 pm

During this workshop, youth will learn how to create their own pom-poms out of yarn. We will discuss various techniques until we find a method that youth prefer the most. Youth will create various pom-poms that can be arranged using a plastic grid mat, which will make up their 3-D art. This project is open to the imagination: wall hangings, rugs, and keychains are just a few of the possibilities.

Wildlife Diorama

Ever wonder what animals live on a tundra or what plants are available for desert animals to eat? During this workshop, youth will be able to pick an ecosystem to learn from and work towards creating a wildlife diorama to enter in fair. The Extension Office will provide a box for youth to create their diorama in, along with items to help use as vegetation and animals. We will work with youth to help research and create the information that will be used on the display. For simplicity of our ecosystem items (food sources, habitat, etc.) we will stick to either a grassland, freshwater, desert, or forest ecosystem.

Shopping in Style
Date: Tuesday, June 18th

Location: York County Chamber Office

Let's go shopping! During this workshop, youth will meet in Downtown York to talk about the concepts of the Shopping in Style program, including how to shop on a budget. Youth will travel between downtown stores, such as Marla's Consignment, Goodwill, and additional locations to put together an outfit on a budget. After shopping as a group, we will all settle in to look at what type of information would be needed for this event.
*YOUTH ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF THEIR OUTFIT.
*YOUTH AGES 12 AND UNDER SHOULD HAVE AN ADULT PRESENT TO HELP WITH FITTINGS AND PURCHASES.

Intro to Canning - Jelly
Time: 8:30 am to Noon
Location: 4-H Building

Join us in learning the beginning techniques to canning by making jelly! Youth will learn a simple recipe that they can recreate at home, practice using the correct equipment for the process, along with consumable supplies that would be needed. Youth will be in groups working to make one batch per each group. Youth will walk away with at least one jar of jelly they can enter in the fair and one jar to enjoy at home. This is a workshop that will be taught combined with Polk County, so numbers will be limited for each county.

Punch Needling

Punch Needling is a technique for stitching using a hand-held tool to thread yarn into fabric. We will learn about our tools, the best technique, along with creating a design to use with for a wall hanging. Each youth will receive a kit with a design that can be created for a fair entry. Youth will be able to keep their tools to use for future projects.

Rainbow Macrame

Join us for this simple, yet fun, creative experience! Youth will have the opportunity to learn a simple macramé technique while creating this simple rainbow. We will talk about color themes, how to make projects your own, and construct a wall hanging that can later be entered into the fair.
