Message from Administration
State law requires that all public schools in Maryland survey students about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning.
Only students in 5th grade will take the Maryland School Survey. during regular school hours. Students will take the survey during school hours in Technology Class with Mrs. Bennett. Specific dates for each 5th grade are listed below. Makeups will be provided if students miss their testing date.
The survey will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences, and students will not be asked to provide any information that might violate their privacy.
The survey is confidential and school personnel will not have access to the responses of specific students. The responses your child provides will be combined with the responses from other students in the school, and results will be reported for each school and district.
We are eager to receive this very important information about your student’s school and about schools across the state. Frequently Asked Questions and the Survey Item Bank may be found on the Maryland School Survey page at https://marylandpublicschools.org/marylandschoolsurvey .
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Mr. Scobie, Assistant Principal at 410-313-5506.

Black History Month
Throughout each year we celebrate the incredible diversity of all of our students at Lisbon. In February, we focus on Black History Month and highlight the important contributions of Black and African Americans who have helped shape our country and contributed to our society.
Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. Throughout the month of February, Lisbon Elementary School will recognize Black History Month and highlight the many accomplishments of African Americans.
We also want to share read-aloud books for kids from Netflix Jr. Many of these books can be found in our library and the Howard County Public Library. We want our students to see themselves and their friends in the literature that is used for instruction and for reading pleasure.
Read Alouds
Grab a book, grab a friend, and join Netflix Jr. in celebrating Black voices during Black History Month. Full Episodes of Bookmarks included are:

News From The Health Room
It is sometimes difficult to decide whether your child is too sick to go to school. As a general rule, a child should stay home if they have:
- A fever higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit
- Vomited (not caused by motion sickness or a gag reflex unassociated with illness)
- Diarrhea
- A very frequent cough
- Persistent pain (tooth, ear, stomach, etc.)
- A widespread rash
Most of these problems need to be discussed with your child’s healthcare provider to determine if an office visit is needed. Please keep your child at home when ill or having a fever (100F or above). Students should stay home until fever free WITHOUT fever reducing medication for 24 hours.
To help prevent the flu and other colds, please encourage your children to use good hygiene habits:
- Wash hands frequently
- Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
- Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
