McGovern News!
March 8, 2024

March is a month filled with significant events, and we want to ensure you're aware of them. Moving forward, each month, I will try to include significant dates and events in the newsletter to share the cultural experiences of our community and beyond. Unintentionally, I may miss something and if I do, please reach out and let me know. It is certainly not my intention. Your input is invaluable as we strive to foster inclusivity and appreciation for all cultures. Together, we can ensure that our celebrations truly reflect the rich diversity of our community. Holidays are only one way we get to know each other and build community. Keep these in mind but remember there are many parts of us that make us unique and that should be valued, not just our holiday celebrations.
Women's History month is celebrated in the month of March and also includes International Women's Day, which is today, March 8th. This month and day, in particular, celebrates the achievements and contributions of women worldwide, promoting gender equality and empowerment.
As we approach the month of Ramadan, it's important for us to recognize and appreciate its significance for those in our community who observe it. Ramadan is a sacred month for many of the Muslim faith, marked by fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It's a time for spiritual growth, empathy, and gratitude. Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs, to focus on their faith and self-discipline. It's a beautiful opportunity for families to come together, strengthen bonds, and engage in acts of charity. Ramadan begins at sundown on Sunday, March 10th and ends at sundown on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. To all those celebrating, we wish you a joyous Ramadan filled with blessings, peace, and happiness.
St. Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on March 17th, honoring the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. It's a day for people of Irish descent and those who simply enjoy the festivities to come together, enjoy traditional Irish music and dance, and partake in the spirit of camaraderie and celebration.
Holi is a vibrant and colorful Hindu festival celebrated primarily in India and Nepal, but also in other parts of the world where Hindu communities reside. This is celebrated on March 25th this year and marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. The festival is known for its lively atmosphere, where people come together to celebrate, play with colors, and enjoy music and dance. Holi is a time for unity, forgiveness, and spreading happiness among friends, family, and neighbors. To those celebrating, Hoping your Holi is full of friendship and joy.
Finally, the month ends with Easter on March 31, 2024. Please remember there is no school on Friday, March 29, 2024 in observance of Good Friday.
Please read below for more information and updates below. Have a great weekend and don't forget to turn your clocks ahead one hour this weekend!
Best,
Amy McDonald, Principal
No School March 15th
A reminder that there will be no school on Friday, March 15 in support of professional development time for educators and support staff.
Daylight Savings Time
As we spring forward with Daylight Savings Time this Sunday, it's a reminder to adjust our clocks and embrace longer days ahead.
Officer McLoughlin Reads to Room 6!
Thursday, March 7th, Mrs. Biagetti and the students in room 6 got a special visit from our School Resource Officer, Paul McLoughlin! Officer McLoughlin read them one of their favorite books "Pete the Cat". We appreciate Medway Police Department for letting us borrow some of Officer McLoughlin's time and can not wait for his next visit!
Project 351 Clothing Drive
Did you know that 245,000 children in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts don’t have warm, comfortable clothing to wear to school each day? Across our state, thousands of children between the ages of zero and twelve depend on donations of basic clothing necessities each year. Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization that works with approximately 75,000 families across the commonwealth to meet these needs. But they can’t do it alone! Please consider helping out this noble organization and these deserving children by donating new or gently used clothing at one of our conveniently located drop boxes any time between
March 18 and March 28.
You can find donation boxes at the following locations:
Medway Middle School
Burke Memorial School
McGovern Elementary School
Boxes will be easy to recognize by their bright colors and “Project 351” and “Cradles to Crayons” labels.
Please remember that “quality equals dignity.” Cradles to Crayons and these deserving children request that you tailor your donations to :
- the age range of 0-12 years,
- only donate clothes that are still in new, or nearly new condition
- Clothing cannot be accepted if it has rips, stains, or any sort of messaging.
- Donations of socks, underwear, and/or pajamas are greatly needed but can only be accepted if they are new.
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! Together, we can improve the lives of thousands of kids and families across Massachusetts.

Parking & Classroom Event's
Parking - Parent Pick-Up
We have recently noticed several cars parking in the bus loop parking lot, outside the main entrance, at dismissal time. Please remember, if you are picking your child up for parent pick-up that you pull into the line. In the event you are parking and walking to meet your child, please park off of school property or at the turn-around area by the field when you first pull into the school's entrance. We have staff and parents entering the school at the end of the day for extracurriculars, meetings, etc. who have no access to parking because of this issue. The front parking lot is also our bus access loop. To ensure safety of all, if must park in the front lot, please be extremely vigilant when crossing the parking lot to enter the building.
Scheduled Classroom Events
If you are at McGovern for a scheduled classroom event, to ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process, please be sure to exit the building promptly and no later than 2:45 pm. Please remain cautious when leaving as our front entrance leads to an active bus loop.
Student Opportunity Act Plan (SOA)
LAST CALL! RESPONSE REQUESTED:
Development of Medway’s 3 year Student Opportunity Act Plan
Medway Public Schools is in the process of developing a plan to submit to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education called a Student Opportunity Act (SOA) Plan. This is a 3 year plan that is intended to focus on a subset of the district’s overall initiatives. Each district’s plan should include the identification of evidence-based programs and strategies that will improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students, including English learners, students with disabilities, and low-income students.
Based on an analysis of student outcomes and feedback from families, school leaders, and faculty and staff, Medway’s SOA Plan for 2024-2027 will focus on enhancing our practices around mathematics education. In order to finalize this plan we are reaching out to seek your feedback to shape this plan.
Thank you for participating in this brief survey by March 1. We will be sharing the DRAFT SOA Plan with School Councils, the Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) and the Medway School Committee throughout the month of March and submitting our final plan to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education by April 1, 2024, per requirement.
Please contact Gabby Abrams, Assistant Superintendent, at gabrams@medwayschools.org with any questions.
FY25 Budget & Strategic Planning Process
Fiscal Year 2025 Budget
During the February 29 School Committee meeting, Dr. Pires, Superintendent, and Mrs. Pat Leonhardt, Director of Business, Finance, and Operations, presented the FY25 Superintendent’s Recommended Budget. The presentation that was shared can be found on the district website.
To keep you informed and engaged in this important process, we are committed to sharing upcoming events and resources designed to foster a transparent and inclusive dialogue with our community. Below is a list of resources and events that have taken place and that will be taking place to provide you with opportunities to remain connected and participate in the discussions surrounding our budget development:
March 14, 2024: Public Hearing on FY25 Budget: On Thursday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Medway Middle School Presentation Room, community members are invited to share public comments regarding the proposed FY25 budget with the School Committee. This is the final opportunity for community feedback prior to the School Committee vote on the FY25 budget. Feedback shared at the hearing will be acknowledged and noted, but there will not be a dialogue during the Budget Hearing.
March 21, 2024: School Committee to Vote on FY25 Budget: At the March 21 School Committee meeting, the committee will vote to approve and forward the FY25 Medway Public Schools Budget to the Town of Medway to be included as part of the FY25 Town of Medway budget.
May 13, 2024: Annual Town Meeting: Community members are encouraged to attend Medway’s Town Meeting on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., at Medway High School, 88 Summer Street, when residents will be asked to vote on the Town of Medway FY25 budget, which will be inclusive of the FY25 Medway Public School’s budget to be used for the 2024-2025 school year.
Strategic Planning Process
We are launching an exciting nine-month process to develop an updated Strategic Plan for the Medway School District. The updated plan will replace the current plan, 2019-2024 Excellence for All: A Medway Mindset, Strategic Plan, while also embedding elements of the recently developed MPS Equity Plan. An important approach to the development of this plan is that it will include engagement and feedback from faculty and staff, students, family, and community members.
We invite you to be a part of shaping our future by joining us in various capacities:
1. Steering Committee: Approximately 18 members, including school, district, and community representatives, will guide and inform the strategic planning process. This commitment involves around 10 meetings, with initial dates set for April 11, May 2, May 16, May 30, and June 13 (tentative). Additional meeting details for next year will follow in the Spring.
2. Advisory Team: Community and school leaders will serve as advocates and advisors to the Steering Committee, ensuring broad engagement. Advisory Team members will participate in a 1:1 interview with our Strategic Planning facilitator and join a Spring Focus Group (dates TBD).
3. Community Workshop: Community members are invited to participate in focus groups to share insights on our strengths and opportunities for improvement.
We aim to finalize our next Strategic Plan by December 1, 2024. If you are interested in staying informed, participating in workshops and surveys, or volunteering for the Advisory Team or Steering Committee, please sign up HERE by March 15, 2024. We'll confirm participation shortly after.
Your involvement is crucial as we chart the course for Medway's educational future. Together, let's shape a strategic plan that reflects our collective aspirations and values.
COVID-19 Guidance
As you may be aware the CDC has dropped the five-day isolation requirement for a positive COVID-19 test. At this time the following Massachusetts guidance is still in effect. If and when the guidance in Massachusetts changes we will update and communicate our new practices.
Approved Transportation Changes
As we have communicated, the Medway School Committee approved the implementation of a Pay to Ride transportation program, as well as some other important changes to the transportation program effective for the 2024-25 school year. While we had planned to share the transportation handbook and information on the registration process by the beginning of March, more time is required. Please anticipate all materials to be shared by the middle of March. Thank you for your patience.
A synopsis of the program approved by the School Committee:
Students in K through Grade 6 who live more than 2 miles from school will receive school transportation at no cost
Students in K through Grade 6 who live less than 2 miles from school, and all students in grades 7-12 who do not qualify for free transportation, can participate in transportation via the district’s Pay to Ride program. The program is structured as follows:
$250 annual fee for first child in a family; $150 annual fee for each additional child with an annual family cap of $550
Students may take a different bus in the morning than the afternoon but each bus (morning and afternoon) must be consistent all 5 days of the week.
- Example of approved scenario:
- Morning pickup on Bus A at home
- Afternoon dropoff on Bus B at daycare
- Example of approved scenario:
- Morning pickup on Bus A at home
- Bus to MEDI on M, T, W

*Note: Transportation to and from MEDI is managed by MEDI and not considered a separate stop
In addition, families who meet the federal guidelines for free and reduced lunch will not be required to pay for transportation. Federal guidelines for the 24-25 school year will be available soon.
Please note that per Medway School Committee policy JFBB, School Choice students are not eligible for district transportation.
Important Resources for Families
Free English Classes for Adults
Last year, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced the launch of MassLinks, the first fully virtual educational option for Massachusetts adults statewide who are seeking their high school equivalency or English language instruction. MassLinks classes are free for all adults, and Mount Wachusett Community College, in partnership with DESE’s Office for Adult and Community Learning Services, will deliver the instruction.
Music in Our Schools
Happy March! This also marks the beginning of Music In Our Schools Month!
Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is an annual celebration that occurs in March, dedicated to highlighting the importance of music education in schools and communities. Initiated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), MIOSM aims to raise awareness of the benefits of music education and advocate for its inclusion in the curriculum. Throughout the month, schools across the United States organize concerts, performances, workshops, and other events to showcase the talents of students and educators in music. As part of this celebration, the Medway Music Department, in collaboration with Medway Friends of the Performing Arts (MFPA) and Medway Cable Access Newswatch, has conducted a series of daily features where a different student (from kindergarten to 12th grade) shares their unique music education experiences through a brief video interview. MFPA will be sharing these daily student features on their Facebook and Instagram pages.
Oakley kicked off our Music In Our Schools Month by being the next student featured on Sunday, March 3rd!

Scholastic Book Fair March 18th - 22nd
Get ready for an enchanting literary journey as the eagerly awaited McGovern Spring Book Fair returns, courtesy of our partnership with Scholastic! Mark your calendars for the week of March 18th, when our school will transform into a treasure trove of literary delights.
What is the Book Fair? The Book Fair is more than just a shopping opportunity, it's a gateway to a world of age-appropriate, high-quality books and products, all available at affordable prices. From the latest releases to specially discounted options, there's something for every bookworm in the family. Not only does it ignite a passion for reading among our students, but it also provides essential funds that enhance our school's curriculum. Your child won't want to miss this adventure, and they'll have the chance to explore the Book Fair during their scheduled Library special timeslot.
Quick Links & Tips for a Seamless Experience:
Payment Options - We accept cash, credit, and checks. For added convenience, we highly recommend using eWallets, especially for our Preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. Find out more about eWallets and how to set one up by visiting our dedicated eWallet section on the book fair website here.
Volunteer Opportunity - Would you like to be a part of your child's Book Fair experience? Sign up here to volunteer and assist their class. We are also in need of volunteers to help setup and pack-away the fair. Please note that all volunteers must have a current CORI clearance, which expires every academic year. If you have any CORI-related questions, feel free to reach out to Amanda Rice, amrice@medwayschools.org for clarification. Parent volunteer's please sign up here.
Donations to Classrooms - Support your child's classroom by contributing to their teacher's or class's eWallet. Keep an eye on your email as teachers will reach out if they've set up an eWallet for their classroom.
'All for Books' Donations - Make a difference by donating during the fair to help McGovern purchase books for our library or students who may not otherwise have access to them.
Tax Information - Please note that there will be tax applied at the book fair. Scholastic recently reclassified as a retailer, resulting in tax collection at the register. We will educate our students about this during the fair, helping them understand how tax is a common part of the shopping experience for adults as well.
Explore our dedicated Scholastic Book Fair website for book trailers, online purchases, and setting up an eWallet.
We are thrilled to embark on this literary adventure during the Book Fair Week and deeply appreciate your support in fostering a love for reading among our students.

Planning for Inclement Weather
It is the goal of the district to hold school whenever possible. Parents and students should plan accordingly and leave plenty of time on winter mornings to arrive at school safely. Please know that the final decision about a child attending school during a weather event always rests with individual families. There may be occasions when deteriorating weather will mean that schools close due to unsafe conditions.
The superintendent will review anticipated road and sidewalk conditions, access to schools, projected weather forecasts, and consult with the police and public works departments in order to make a determination between approximately 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. if conditions will be safe for students to come to school.
The following plans will be in effect for inclement weather:
No School Announcement
If the superintendent has determined the conditions are unsafe, school will be canceled. The district will utilize the emergency notification system that will contact your home/cell phone and email using the information you have provided to your child’s school. The “no-school” announcement will also be shared on social media channels and carried on local television channels 4, 5, and 7.
All classes, school activities, before and after school programs, the Medway Extended Day program (MEDI), daycare program, adult education evening classes, and any school facilities use activities will be canceled. Transportation of students to out-of-district schools will also be canceled.
One or Two-Hour Delayed Opening Announcement
If the superintendent has been notified that the public works department needs additional time to plow or sand the streets to ensure safety, then a determination for a one or two-hour delay may be made. As with no-school announcements, the delayed opening announcement will be made using the emergency notification system to home/cell phone and email and carried on local television channels.
Please keep in mind:
Bus routes will begin by a one or two-hour delay, including all special education transportation for out-of-district schools.
Do not send your child to school earlier than the delayed opening, as the school grounds may not be plowed and there will be no staff available to supervise early arrivals.
PreK ½ day sessions will take place if a one hour delay is called, and will be canceled for a two hour delay.
School lunch will be served at its regularly scheduled time.
Schools will be dismissed at their regular times.
Emergency Early Release Announcement
If a severe weather condition or other emergency develops during the school day, the district may release students before the typical end of the school day. Parents will be notified by home/cell phone and email and the announcement will be carried on local television channels, and displayed on the district website. As appropriate, the district will work with public safety officials to shelter students in the district if unable to send home.
Inclement Weather Bus Stops for Walkers
We understand that inclement weather days can present challenges when it comes to getting your child to school safely. Snow clearing responsibilities for our town begin with the main roads, followed by sidewalks around our schools. We recognize that this can be especially concerning for families whose children typically walk to and from school.
In the event that sidewalks are not passable and you are unable to find an alternative means of transportation for your child(ren) on these days, we are here to help. To assist us in providing a solution that ensures your child's safe travel to school, please complete the brief form linked here.
By completing this form, you'll enable us to notify you of the designated bus stop location where your child(ren) can board or exit the bus on such occasions. We have introduced this service to support safe transportation to school during inclement weather, and we appreciate your proactive participation.
It is important to note that these specialized bus stops will only be available to families who have signed up in advance. We will communicate additional information once the inclement weather bus stops have been established.
Additional Reminders for Parents
Be sure your child’s school has your updated contact information.
Have a family emergency plan in place so your child knows what to do if sent home for any of the reasons noted above.
If your child is regularly driven to school and you or they feel it is unsafe to drive during the inclement weather, please determine an alternative means of transportation to school.
Breakfast, Lunch and Snack
Snack
Families are asked to provide students with a daily snack to bring to school. If there are any barriers to a family providing a daily snack, please reach out to our main office and they will connect you with an administrator or counselor and we will ensure that all students have snacks daily.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
We are thrilled to offer all students breakfast and lunch free of charge. All students are offered breakfast as they come through the doors at McGovern School and students chose their lunch in the cafeteria. If you do not want your students to eat breakfast or lunch, please have a conversation with your student about your home expectations.
