TEPSAN of the Year
We are so pleased to tell you that our beloved LABC Principal, Ashley Howard has been named as the 2024 Region 17 TEPSAN of the Year by the Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association (TEPSA). Members from the 20 TEPSA Regions across the state annually honor a colleague for their outstanding service to the association. Award recipients must be committed to advancing the principalship & the association and serving as a voice for Texas students. Mrs. Howard was recognized yesterday at the TEPSA Awards Luncheon and will be honored again in June. “Ashley lends her time & expertise to support Texas PK-8 leaders & ensures student success. We are proud to recognize her dedication & work on behalf of the Association," said TEPSA Executive Director Harley Eckhart. TEPSA, whose hallmark is educational leaders learning with & from each other, has served Texas PK-8 school leaders since 1917. Member-owned & member-governed, TEPSA has more than 5,900 members who direct the activities of more than 3 million PK-8 school children. Ashley has been with Levelland ISD for seven years. She started at LABC as an Assistant Principal & then moved to Principal. She is a fantastic leader for LISD #expectingexcellence in her school, her staff, & her students' learning. Ashley, we are so proud of you & your dedication to making education better for students! Congratulations on this nice honor!
All Things LISD..................
LISD celebrated Ag Awareness Week this week as spring began! Texas Farm Bureau sent reading teachers their book of the year: How To Grow A Monster by Kiki Thorpe. It wasn't about a monster, of course, but a giant zucchini plant that finally won the county fair competition! You could find students learning about plants everywhere all week. Some teachers expanded on the science lesson in the story by planting plants or watching plants grow. Some heard the book read by Kiki Thorpe through a digital link. Young and old learned vocabulary words like harvest and pollination and a new meaning of monster. Everyone learned a little more about gardening. We found a rabbit that even got in on the action. This was a great way to focus on Ag Awareness Week & Levelland ISD sends out a huge thank you to Texas Farm Bureau for the books & lesson ideas. We appreciate the connection we make with Farm Bureau!

Edens Earns DAR Good Citizen Honor
LHS #expectsexcellence is so proud to recognize Senior Grason Edens for being a DAR Good Citizen! He was recognized at a DAR Good Citizen reception in Lubbock. This award recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. Grason demonstrates these qualities to an outstanding degree. Once selected as a DAR Good Citizen, Grason won third place in the Scholarship Contest by writing a personal statement and an essay for the prompt, "What are the civic responsibilities of a good citizen and why are these duties, activities and behaviors important to the shaping of the America you hope to experience?" Grason has participated in Academic UIL while at LHS and is active in National Honor Society as the Vice President and in Young Emerging Leaders of Levelland as the Vice President of Membership. Grason, we wish you the best as you graduate and head on to SPC for further education before moving on to Texas Tech University to Major in Biology!
Weather Study
Do you know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning? South third graders do! They have been studying the weather and were treated to special guest Jacob Riley speaking to them earlier today about all things meteorology. Mr. Riley is KLBK's Chief Meteorologist and encouraged these kids to learn lots of math & science, and go to college if they want to be a meteorologist. He explained how meteorologists gather the weather using satellite data, balloons, and observation sites. He talked about high & low pressure. He made sure that students were going to make sure they have a safe place in case of bad weather too! Thank you Mr. Riley, for teaching more about being safe in bad weather and for helping us know what it takes to be in your career!
Student Health
We always want to put our students' welfare front and center. We are so happy that Capitol and South Elementary third graders received a free dental screening and sealant put on their teeth with Covenant Outreach Dental. These free screenings help advise parents if their child needs to see a dentist. The sealants protect vulnerable areas from tooth decay by sealing out plaque and food, protecting students' health. Thank you, Covenant Outreach Dental, for keeping our LISD students healthy!
LMS Jungle Art
We feel so lucky that we have the best Art teachers! We know that Art is just one more way to reach students and help them find where they want to be after graduation. Thank you Ms. Jackson, for helping your students learn more about themselves through expression and creativity.

CMN Fundraiser
South Elementary wrapped up their annual Children's Miracle Network Fundraiser last week. They raised $3567.69 this year by having penny wars, playing games, dressing as a twin, wearing pjs, dancing in the dark, and more. This money will stay in our area to help children in need. Thank you, South Elementary for always hosting this event. Thank you also to Mrs. Lacey Guzman, Mrs. Kayla Belcher & the South Student Council for organizing all the fun events that brought in cash.
Future Chef's Competition!
Each year, LISD Sodexo Cafeteria Services hosts the Future Chef's Challenge and this year was no different. We know that it's never too early to start teaching students how to make healthy food choices, master basic cooking skills, and engage in a little friendly competition. LISD elementary students were invited to submit dessert recipes this year. The recipes are then judged & 3 competitors from Capitol & South are chosen to compete in the Future Chefs Challenge. The three competitors chosen this year were South fourth-grader Aly Holly with her Red Velvet Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting, Capitol third-grader Ryan Jordan with his Sushi ala Cheesecake, and Capitol fourth-grader Hayes Howard with his banana nut bread. The recipes were judged on taste, healthiness, kid-friendliness, originality, ease of preparation, plate presentation, and student chef presentations to the judges. It was a tough decision, but the winner was Hayes Howard's banana nut bread this year. What a great way to showcase our students’ creativity, skills and initiative! Thank you to Steve Croyle, our cafeteria managers, and our Judges for helping make this event a huge success!

YELL Enjoys Guest Speaker
The Chamber of Commerce hosted the YELL meeting this week and enjoyed hearing Mr. Matthew Race speak about planning a budget, living by a budget , saving for the future, and donating to charity. Mr. Race is an expert on Money Matters and taught students how to make a monthly budget and stick to it. He advised everyone to read and study the book "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. Thank you, Mr. Race, for making this a topic we now understand!
