Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024 – Prepare for Safe Viewing
Michigan's eclipse coverage will range from 75% in the northwest Upper Peninsula to a small area in the southeast Lower Peninsula experiencing totality (100%). Adults and children alike will want to see this exciting scientific occurrence! Although FHS dismisses at 2:39 p.m. and most students will be home before the anticipated max coverage at 3:10 - 3:15 p.m., we will distribute a limited number of glasses for students to pick-up on the way out of the building.
Other schools may be engaging in end-of-day dismissal while the eclipse is happening, so students and families may need information in advance for safe viewing.
Looking directly into a solar eclipse for any amount of time can be damaging to the human eye, so top priority is to prepare for eye safety. Use the following resources to prepare everyone for a safe and exciting learning experience:
- Eye Safety During a Total Solar Eclipse (NASA)
- Where to Get Solar Eclipse Glasses (America Academy of Ophthalmology)
- Solar Eclipse Observer’s Guides and Handouts (NSTA)
- Where & When (NASA)
- American Astronomical Society
- Video: Eclipse Watching Information for Principals and Administrators (5 minutes)
- Live NASA Broadcast of 2024 Total Solar Eclipse (YouTube)

Fenton Robotics - Going to Worlds - April 15-20
Fenton's own High School Robotics Team, Titanium Tigers #5114, competed over Spring Break in Midland, Mi. The team brought home another blue banner win and an award for Engineering Excellence. The team is currently tied for 2nd in the state of Michigan out of 514 teams! Because of their State Ranking, they have automatically qualified for Worlds.
The robotics team is celebrating their 10th year. The 3 blue banners that they have won in the past 4 weeks account for 1/3 of all blue banners ever achieved by the team. This is truly an outstanding group of kids. The team is headed to the World Championship April 15-20. As we have done with other students reaching State Level competition, there will be a "clap out" on Friday, April 12th during 6th hour.
Robotics are headed to State competition this weekend at SVSU and admission is free to all. Check us out on FB and Instagram @FentonTigers Robotics.
Saginaw Valley State University (7400 Bay Road, University Center, MI 48710) is located in University Center, MI just outside of Saginaw. It is being held at the Ryder Center Athletic/ Sports Complex. The parking lots that best serve the complex are highlighted in yellow, and the buildings that we will be in are building 13 (indoor football field). This is where the pits are located for all of the teams. They are really strict about not having food and drink in this area and safety glasses are required.

Teaching & Learning
Entrepreneurs
Students in Mr. Burwitz's (and student teacher, Ms. Daly's) Entrepreneur club and Business, Management, and Administration classes tapped into their entrepreneurship skills, and created their own unique problem-solving products and developed business plans to support the development of these products.
These students competed in an in school competition, and now the following students will be going on to compete at the county-wide level in a live competition:
1. Julia Blanchard
2. Nathan Finch
3. Gage Graham
4. Isabelle Ice
5. Vaughn Parker
6. Claire Weir
At the county-wide competition, students could win prizes ranging from $150 to $2,000. It's been awesome seeing them take these simple ideas and transform them into something tangible and maybe be even a marketable product.

Positivity Project: Theme of the Week: Humor
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humor. Humor means you like to laugh and bring smiles to other people.
Humor is a sense of playfulness and lightness. It is a way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. People with this strength don’t specifically need to be joke tellers, although many are.
Humor plays an important role in helping groups of people rise above difficult circumstances and boost morale. It removes us from our present difficulties by easing tension and making life more fun. This is why athletic teams often need a jokester to help them get through tough losses and early morning fitness sessions. On a larger societal level, humor often helps downtrodden groups to find cohesion and strength. This is why Simon Wiesenthal said, “Humor is the weapon of unarmed people: it helps people who are oppressed smile at the situation that pains them.”
To practice and encourage the character strength of humor with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Online Protection for Children
Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography, illegal drugs and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. To reduce these influences on youth, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, text messages, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. The Michigan Child Protection Registry, like the federal Do Not Call List, is a free do-not-contact service for Michigan’s families and can be located at www.ProtectMIChild.com."
