PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Solar Eclipse Day at Northeast
On Monday students and staff will have an opportunity to go outside and view the Solar Eclipse with the use of the special eclipse glasses purchased by the Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation. We held a special All School Meeting on Friday to discuss the Solar Eclipse and to explain the importance of keeping the glasses on while viewing the eclipse. Our Science Specialist, Mrs. Sorbera, has been preparing students for this event for weeks. If there are students who are not demonstrating safe behavior, they will not be able to participate.
Staff and students will be heading outside to the basketball court at 2:15 for the viewing. We realize that many parents are lined up to pick up students around that time. You may not dismiss your child from the field. All students will be dismissed from the school beginning at 3:00, as usual. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
If you would like to opt your child out of this viewing activity, please reach out to your child's teacher or the main office on Monday morning.
DOTY STREET ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
Due to ongoing safety concerns, the use of Doty Arrival and Dismissal is strictly for students who are walking to school from their home in the morning and walking from school to their home in the afternoon. This is no longer a drop off or pick up area and cars are not permitted on or near the Harmon Road access to Northeast. This is primarily an emergency access to the school for emergency vehicles. The drop off and pick up procedures are located on the Northeast property. Drop off in the morning is the Kiss and Ride procedure in which students are dropped off by the Gym doors. Pick up in the afternoon is located down by the basketball court/field. Please see our arrival/dismissal descriptions and maps:
Thank you for your cooperation.
MCAS
MCAS continues this week with ELA Session 2 for students in Grades 3, 4 and 5. Please see the MCAS calendars below for specific MCAS testing days for your child(ren). It is very important that your child(ren) be in school for their testing days and be ON TIME. Students who arrive late to school on their testing day will not be allowed to enter their classroom until testing is over and will have to participate in a make-up session. It is equally important for all of our students to be well rested and have a healthy breakfast on testing days in order for them to be prepared to do their best.

WALTHAM BOYS & GIRLS CLUB 5th ANNUAL SCIENCE FAIR
The Education Department of the Waltham Boys & Girls Club has put on a science fair annually since the Spring of 2018. For the safety of our community, there was no event in 2020 and 2021 due to the spreading of the coronavirus. Our science fair aims to open the youth in our community to opportunities to win awards, gain a deep understanding of an area of science that interests them, and challenge themselves. Science fairs help develop various skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, time management, and communication by applying the principles of the scientific method. A science fair is a great opportunity for youth to build their confidence in their presentation skills. It is also a way for them to share their knowledge and expertise with the community. We at the Waltham Boys & Girls Club acknowledge how profound and impactful science fairs are to our community and are excited to announce this year’s date: Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 4 - 6 pm
MASS DOT SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
In January, a representative from MASS DOT's Safe Routes to School came to Northeast Elementary School to conduct an evaluation of our arrival and dismissal procedures. The report they provided us is here for your review. Overall, they were pleased with the procedures and structures we have in place. There are recommendations for improvement, which we will consider and make adjustments as needed. The main priority is the safety of our students and staff members.
