Student Life at SMS
Dear Archers,
STATE TESTING:
If you need to pick up your student during our state testing window, please make sure he/she/they have a note. Once testing starts, Oregon State Testing guidelines limit how a testing session can be interrupted without creating an impropriety.
Why test?
Sherwood has traditionally scored very high showcasing the academic rigor and success of students at the middle level, a standard we are committed to continuing.
Student participation is imperative for staff asking for resources, programs, and support, so we appreciate your partnership in encouraging your student(s) to do their best.
As an 8th grader, to earn the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, one requirement is growth achievement on the English Language Arts, Math, and Science (if applicable) state testing.
Forecasting for next year:
Forecasting forms were given to students this past Wednesday.
They are due back on APRIL 24th to the front office.
Have your student(s) number their top 10 choices. (#1 is their favorite.)
If your student wants Band or Choir, please label it #1.
If your student chooses an elective that needs a teacher's recommendation or signature, they MUST complete that to be considered for that elective class.
Warning! Students are not guaranteed their first elective choice; it all depends on enrollment and schedules.
FLEX reminders:
Emails are being sent to notify you of your student’s FLEX class. The notice will be sent by Tuesday, the night before a FLEX class, and will tell you whether your student was hard-requested (teacher assigned) or whether he/she/they chose the class to attend.
There are grade-level specific test make-up sessions that students can utilize.
Please encourage your student to sign up in the area(s) he/she/they need support in or would like an extension experience.
This week we were also able to take a FLEX field trip to Evergreen Curling Club to practice curling on ice to extend the learning from their FLEX instruction.

This is Sherwood Middle School's 10th year supporting the nonprofit organization, Camp Attitude! This local organization provides an opportunity for people with disabilities and their families that would not otherwise have the chance to attend a typical camp experience and it is at no cost to them.
Sherwood Middle School Leadership and Sherwood Service Club have partnered up to create a two week Rafflethon event where all funds will be donated directly to Camp Attitude.
Raffle tickets will be $1, or 6 for $5, and will be sold before school and during all lunches April 15th - April 26th. There are 8 raffle basket prizes and Pie-a-SMS-staff-member in the face jar students can use their tickets for.
Winners will be announced during our May assembly!
Spring Emergency Drills
All Sherwood schools will be participating in our third and final round of emergency drills for this school year April 22-May 3. Each school will select either a "Secure" or a "Lockdown" drill for this final round. These drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific actions that would occur in an emergency situation. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department to continue improving our safety plans. You may notice increased police presence if you are on/near our campus during an emergency drill, as our SROs do participate in checking our building security during the drill.
During drills, staff and students are secured within the building. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the drill has been completed.
For more information on District emergency response protocols and communication, please visit the SSD website here.
