CTE Classes an Option for PHHS Students
Welding students include Kyle Harpold, John Kramer, Colby Johnston, Hank York, Braiden Malicoat, and Aiden Batty.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes are an option for Parke Heritage High School students who are wanting courses that will best guide them in their career decisions.
The CTE classes are available to juniors and seniors and help prepare students for college as well as going into the workforce. Many of the courses available to PHHS students offer college dual credits as well as industry recognized certifications. As students begin their scheduling process for the 2023-24 school year, they need to keep in mind that the CTE classes are an option for them to select.
There are currently 70 PHHS students enrolled in the CTE programs offered through Wabash River Career and Technical Education (WRCTE) program. Students are able to enroll in one of 14 different CTE classes offered. The classes are held either in the morning or afternoon, so students still attend other classes at PHHS. There are varying types of classes available so that students can select an area that best interests them. The classes include Auto Technology, Construction Technology, Computer Technology, Criminal Justice, Cosmetology, Early Childhood Education, Education Professions, Emergency Medical Service, Graphic Design, Health Careers, Robotics, Veterinary Careers, and Welding.
Another option available to students is the Work-Based Learning program. In this program, students attend school one half of the day and are employed at local businesses the second half. They work a minimum of 15 hours a week with the possibility of working evenings and weekends up to 30 hours a week. Working in a career field allows students to obtain hands-on skills in the area they are interested in pursuing. Mrs. Stephanie Studebaker is the Work-Based Learning Coordinator.
Work-based businesses that have participated in this program include Elanco, Parke County REMC, IEA, Hanner Law Office, and retail places as well as farms. The program is varied depending on what career area the students are interested in pursuing. At the left- Rebekah Ayres works at the Parke County Public Library as a part of this program.
In addition to learning about their potential careers, students attend a special class once a week with Mrs. Studebaker. This class provides students with information about such topics as proper business etiquette, interviewing, insurance, banking, tax preparation, identity theft and other areas that they will need to know once out of high school.
Students who are interested in enrolling in one of the CTE classes, need to add the class to their schedule and to complete the application form
If you would like to learn more information about the programs offered through Wabash River Career and Technical Education, please contact Craig Newby, program director, at newbyc@wrcte.org or contact Mrs. Studebaker at studebakers@ncp.k12.in.us.

PHMS Students Solve A Math Mystery
Who did it?
That was the question posed to eighth grade math students in Mrs. Ashley McAmis’ class. They were invited to attend the party of the decade which included bands, lots of food and only a handful of people have been invited.
During the evening, a security guard announces that someone has been shot. The perpetrator is mingling with the rest of the guests.
Solving problems using the Pythagorean theorem, students must use their detective skills to determine who in the room is the suspect. Each student was given a suspect card with identifying characteristics to help them solve the crime. Once solving the problems and getting their clues, the students had to roam around the room to see the identity of each suspect.
Four groups of students solved the crime and earned their detective badge. They were Mariana Ponce and Maddison Fisher, Oakden Sapp, Ethan Hanson and Braxton Bamberg, and Kali Burgess. Mrs. Melissa Gillogly also solved the mystery.
