MYSTERY GUEST READERS FROM THE COMMUNITY

At least a dozen special guest readers from around the St. Albans community came into school this past Friday (3-15-2024) to read to students in their classrooms. It was exciting for the students to meet non-school adults who are eager to share their passion about reading. Each reader brought in their favorite age-relevant book(s) to introduce to our students. There was a state representative, several military personnel, and the St. Albans Mayor among other kind people. Thanks to every reader for their support.

ROBOT ADVENTURES - HAPPENING THROUGH MARCH

As seen in the below video, robots at City school are suffering from winter boredom. They had so much fun during the month of code in December but now are tucked away in their boxes awaiting adventure. What does this have to do with you? Your class can help give the robots a vacation. Simply let the STEAM team know which robot you want and when! We will deliver the robots to you-- ready to go!

https://www.wevideo.com/view/3328938796

AND as an incentive....the class that gives the robot the best vacation will win a robot for their classroom! (contest goes through the end of March)

Not sure which robot to choose? Our makerspace website lists all the robots we have (as well as the quantity) and has a video showing how they work with each one, as well as details on ease of use OR just reach out and we can help match your class with an appropriate robot. Here is the link to the robot website:

ROSIE THE RIVETER

An ALA Best Book for Young Adults, the award-winning account of how 18 million women, many of whom had never before held a job, entered the workforce in 1942-45 to help the United States fight World War II. Their unprecedented participation would change the course of history for women, and America, forever.

ASTRONAUTS: WOMEN ON THE FINAL FRONTIER

In the graphic novel Astronauts: Women on the Final Frontier, Jim Ottaviani and illustrator Maris Wicks capture the great humor and incredible drive of Mary Cleave, Valentina Tereshkova, and the first women in space.

The U.S. may have put the first man on the moon, but it was the Soviet space program that made Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space. It took years to catch up, but soon NASA’s first female astronauts were racing past milestones of their own. The trail-blazing women of Group 9, NASA’s first mixed gender class, had the challenging task of convincing the powers that be that a woman’s place is in space, but they discovered that NASA had plenty to learn about how to make space travel possible for everyone.

SONIA SOTOMAYOR

The inspiring and timely story of Sonia Sotomayor, who rose up from a childhood of poverty and prejudice to become the first Latino to be nominated to the US Supreme Court.

Before Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor took her seat in our nation's highest court, she was just a little girl in the South Bronx. Justice Sotomayor didn't have a lot growing up, but she had what she needed -- her mother's love, a will to learn, and her own determination. With bravery she became the person she wanted to be. With hard work she succeeded. With little sunlight and only a modest plot from which to grow, Justice Sotomayor bloomed for the whole world to see.
