An Introduction to Western Hills High School
What Do I Think New Teachers Need to Know?
When you think about the library media specialist you probably think of the person who is responsible for checking books in and out and someone who helps students use computers for research. Although I do these things there is SO much more that I can and will do for you and your students. I am an instructional partner which means I will come alongside of you and help you teach your students because in reality, they are all OUR students.
I also serve as the School Technology Coordinator (STC). That means that any problems you have with your computers, projectors, bulbs, document cameras, wires, internet, email, etc. come to me. Sometimes I can fix whatever the issue may be. Hopefully, I will have some techie students who can also assist with technology troubleshooting. If the problem is something we cannot solve, then you will need to put in a Technology Help Ticket. I will assign the ticket to Tim Schell, our Computer Technician, or one of the other technology guys at Central Office.
Feel free to ask, call or email me with any random Western Hills Wolverine questions as well. If I don't know the answer, I'll help you find it. It's why I am here.

Laminator
The laminator is located in my office. I am more than happy to laminate things for you, or I can teach you how to do your own laminating. Student aides are not allowed to laminate. These first few weeks of school I will be laminating more frequently due to new school decor. After that I will turn the laminator on as needed. Once things settle down I hope to have a library aide and a designated class period when lamination will be done.
Bulletin Board Paper
White bulletin board paper is provided for teachers and students to use. The paper rack is mounted on the wall in the copier room as you walk to the teachers' lounge. If you would like bulletin board paper in any other color, you must buy it through your department or out of your own pocket.
Copiers
We have two networked copiers in the copier room. Each faculty member will choose his/her own 4 digit copy id number. I will keep a master list of the codes and program them into the copiers. I can help you set up the networked copiers as your printers. Please print to the copiers as it is cheaper than printing to the library printer or individual/departmental printers. If the copier becomes jammed, PLEASE STOP and let me know. I do not mind at all to unjam the machines.
Scantron Machine and Forms
Our school has an Op-Scan 3 Scantron machine which is unlike any other Scantron machine I have used. I think this one is pretty old, but it is functional 99.9% of the time.
I order the number of Scantron forms requested by the teachers for both their semester and final exams. If you wish to use Scantron forms for assessments other than these exams, you will need to use department money. I can help you order the forms appropriate for our machine so please ask me. I have some old leftover Scantron forms which you are welcome to use until they run out.

Student E-mail Accounts
If a student does not know his/her login, email address, or password, PLEASE send the student to me in the library. I can look up email addresses and reset passwords. I can also see whether a student's account has been disabled and re-enable it, with administrator permission.
MOST student email accounts will be in this form:
firstname.lastname@stu.franklin.kyschools.us and have Today001 as the temporary password. However, there are exceptions to this form so please have students check with me. Please ask your students to use their full legal names as listed in Infinite Campus. For example: Alexander not Alex, Jennifer instead of Jenny, etc.
Passwords must be changed every 120 days and now must be AT LEAST 8 characters in length and contain AT LEAST three out of these four options:

Students must sign in at the computer station with their student id numbers or library card when they arrive. Mrs. Bell or one of the library aides will assist students who do not know their student id numbers. Students must sign out at the computer station upon leaving the library media center. Rhonda Spence Bell - Media Specialist / School Technology Coordinator
This is my 6th year at Western Hills High School, and my 24th year as an educator. Before coming to the library, I was a high school math teacher for 17 years. I am available to help locate resources, research, find the perfect book, collaborate, and design lessons and projects. The easiest way to reach me is email as sometimes the library is too loud for me to hear the phone, or I am away from my desk.
