Message From the School Nurse
Immunization and Exam Requirements for ALL WV 7th Graders
Attention Parents/Guardians of Students Entering 7th Grade
All West Virginians students entering 7th grade must have one dose of the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and one dose of the Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4). All students, including JVA and homebound students are required to be in compliance with immunization requirements. Please be advised that West Virginia does *not* recognize religious exemptions. These immunizations are required to attend the first day of 7th grade.
Tdap: Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) – Pertussis is spread by coughing and sneezing. Anyone can catch Pertussis and spread it to others, including infants.
Meningitis: Poses a serious threat to adolescents. Meningitis can kill a healthy person in 48 hours or less. Up to 1 in 5 survivors of Meningitis have problems for the rest of their lives, due to the loss of limbs, hearing loss, and neurological damage.
Call your primary care physician to schedule a vaccine review, and immunizations. If you do not have a primary care provider, you may contact Jefferson County Health Department (304-728-8416) to schedule immunizations. Local pharmacies are also able to provide immunizations. Please schedule your vaccination appointments as soon as possible. If you do not have a primary care provider and your student requires a sports physical, contact local Urgent Care Centers to have it completed.
If you have any questions regarding these requirements for your students, please contact me at mariah.dent@k12.wv.us as soon as possible. Noncompliance with immunizations will require your student to be removed from school with unexcused absences. Please submit completed shot records to the nurse, emailing the record is suggested.
Thank you,
Mariah Dent, MSN, BCSN, WVCSN
