April 29-May 3
Walkersville High School
Message from the Principal
Dear Walkersville Community,
I can't believe next week brings us into May! We have so much coming up with MCAP testing, AP testing, and graduation. As the warmer weather comes, we hope you will join our FFA for their annual plant sale, which kicks off this Saturday from 9-12 in the greenhouse. Please come out and support this amazing group!
With tonight being prom, I want to wish all students who will be attending, a fun and safe night. As a reminder, everyone should park at WHS and take the shuttle over. Students must arrive by 8:00 to enter.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dr. Stephanie Ware
Principal
Staff Appreciation- from the PTSA
Staff Appreciation Week is almost here and we have a fabulous week planned for our amazing WHS teachers and staff May 6-10. Our events include staff superlatives (with awards!), a morning cereal and coffee bar, sweet mailbox treats, a soda/drink bar, and a lunchtime baked potato/dessert bar. We can't make this happen without all of you, so please take a minute to check out the donation list and sign up for something if you are able.

Baby Chicks
Baby Chicks
I incubate and raise chicks in my classroom every year, but am maxed out for chickens on my property. I look for good adopters each year. If you’re interested, I need to know that you will provide a good home and are able to raise a chick and keep a chicken. They need to be adopted in 3’s or more because of their social nature. They are not any specific breeds, but come from donated eggs, so are often mixes, but I can let you know what possible breeds they might come from. Chick sex is not known.
Needs for chicks:
Food container
Water container
Chick starter food
Chick grit
Brooder with heat (adjustable heating plate is preferred, but heat lamps can do if very secure and wire-covered)
I use a really large clothing bin and put chicken wire over the top as they get bigger to prevent escaping
HEAT! They must be on heat 24 hrs/day until fully feathered ~6-7 weeks old - age determines the temp →
Need for chickens:
Coop with protected run (Mine free range during the day and can hide under the short deck from bird predators)
Calcium supplement (crushed egg shells/oyster shells)
Chick food, then Layer food (around 5-8 months you’d switch to this)
Large waterer
Nesting box(es) in the coop
Bedding (especially for warmth in the winter)
Register with the State (free) so they can alert you of any diseases in your area. Check local requirements (town, HOA, etc.).
If interested, please contact kate.boller@fcps.org. Let me know how many you’re looking to adopt, and I’ll put you on our list of possible adopters. After they hatch I’ll ask for a picture of the brooder set up (sadly, I need this because of past adoptions gone wrong) to make sure they’re ready to go. I usually keep them until they are 3-4 weeks old, then they move on to their new homes. Chicks are free, but small donations are accepted. This year’s chicks will hatch around May 8, and ready to leave WHS after Memorial Day.
Thanks!
Mrs. Boller
Supervision of Younger Children at WHS Events
This is a reminder that while we love to see our whole community supporting our Lions, children are not permitted to be unsupervised during events. We want our events to be safe, orderly, and allow everyone to focus on cheering our students on. Please ensure that younger children are with adults at all times when visiting WHS. Thank you.
