SMS Weekly Update
March 1, 2024
Student Life at SMS
Last week saw the conclusion of our 2024 Oregon Battle of the Books competition. Students competed in their first rounds of competition in the Media Center and finalist teams were able to compete for the SMS OBOB Championship during our Finals session on the stage of the theater. Mr. Shotwell and Mrs. Anderson served as quizmasters during this competition, and both commented on how fun it was to see students engaging with books, working collaboratively, and having a great time while doing so. Nice work OBOB teams!
We also held an open house for any students interested in choir so that they could learn more about the program and see if they would like to forecast for it as an elective next year. Students were treated to an amazing showcase by the Mixolydians, the acapella group from the high school, and the excitement about choir was evident.

Choir Open House
Dear Archers,
Welcome to March. This morning’s snow was quite the surprise as we get closer and closer to springtime.
There are a number of exciting opportunities for students to showcase all of their hard work in coming weeks. Tomorrow evening is the annual Swingin’ the Green fundraiser for the Sherwood Band programs. More information about this incredible event can be found below if you are interested and haven’t already purchased your tickets. Next week also includes the Spring Choir Concert for our students at Sherwood High School. On Thursday next week we will be holding our Outdoor School Parent Information Night. If you have a 6th grader who anticipates attending Outdoor School this spring this night will provide an overview of what that experience will look like. It’s a wonderful opportunity and we hope that all can attend.
Lastly, we have received a number of tissue and disinfectant donations that are incredibly appreciated by our staff and students. We have also been recipients of some nice surprise gifts for staff recently. Your kindness and generosity does not go unnoticed and the staff feels fortunate to have the support of such a wonderful community.
Thank you for all that you do to support SMS, the Students, and the Staff.

A Request
School Need: Tissues and Disinfecting Wipes
Our current stock of tissues and disinfecting wipes has been nearly cleared out as students and staff power through winter cold and flu season. Any donations of disinfecting wipes or tissue would be greatly appreciated. Donations may be dropped off in the main office of the school.
Outdoor School Informational Meeting
On March 7, from 6:00 - 7:00pm we will have a guest presenter from NW Outdoor School here to provide information about the Outdoor Science School experience for our 6th graders. The presenter will be speaking about the program, providing an overview of what students and families can expect, and answering any questions that you may have. Please join us in the SMS Commons for this informative night!
SMS will be attending Outdoor School at either Trickle Creek or Cedar Ridge during either May 14 - 17, or May 21 - 24. More information will be coming soon about which camp and week your student will be attending.

National School Breakfast Week March 4th-8th, 2024
National School Breakfast Week celebrates the importance of a nutritious school breakfast in fueling students for success. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:
Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
Score higher on standardized tests
Have better concentration and memory
Be more alert
Maintain a healthy weight
Nutrition Services is celebrating by hosting a raffle contest! Next week, each student participating in School Breakfast will receive a raffle ticket (limit one entry per day). On Friday morning, we will draw the winner of this year's prize; a Nintendo Switch (provided by our partners at General Mills).
Happy National School Breakfast Week!
