MLC Weekly News and Notes
March 4th-8th
Hello, MLC community. What a wacky weather week! Just a reminder to send your students with layers for recess. We go outside as much as we possibly can!
This Saturday our 4x5 Oregon Battle Of the Books team will go to compete in the regional match at Lake Oswego Middle School! This is the second year for MLC to participate in OBOB. Shout out to both 4x5 teams that battled it out this week at MLC for the regional competition spot. Both teams were amazing and there was a very small difference in the final score.
We want to wish "Caution! We're Reading!" the best of luck this weekend!
Let's have a wonderful week!
Best,
Suezann & Darren

Library News
Volunteers needed in the library!
Our library needs some love.
Here are some of the projects we are working on:
- Shelving books
- Weeding out old or damaged books
- Cleaning up the shelves so the books are in the correct places
- Book displays, bulletin boards, general decor updating
If any of these seems like something you can help with, send Molly an email msoloway@pps.net
PTSA News

Our next meeting is this Tuesday, March 5, 6:30-8:00pm
MLC Library and Zoom (see mlcptsa.org for the Zoom link)
Dinner and childcare are provided for all meetings.
PARKING CREW: Volunteer and be entered to win a prize
The MLC PTSA hosts parking in our school lots for Timbers and Thorns games which helps support our school with much-needed funds for classrooms and electives supplies, field trips, scholarships and community events…so many of the things we love about MLC! Shifts are short and we will be there to teach you everything you need to know. For every shift you volunteer, we will enter your name into a raffle for a prize (Timbers tickets, Oaks Park skating passes, Sterling coffee, and more)! Thanks to our generous donors for these fun incentives!
Sign up HERE with a friend or come make new ones! Questions? Contact our coordinators, Tammy or Chenney.
SAVE THE DATE: PTSA Popcorn Social
The annual MLC Talent Show will take place Thursday, March 21, at 1:00pm in the MLC Auditorium. Join us to celebrate with a popcorn social 3:30-4:00pm by the gate to Couch Park.
SPREAD THE WORD: Elementary Enrollment
We all know MLC is a special school, but many in our community may not even be aware that we are an option for their families. Help spread the word about the magic of MLC! The Lottery Window for 2024-25 Elementary School is from February 15 to March 15 and registration for 2024-25 Kindergarten starts March 1 so time is of the essence.
ADVOCATE: Education Funding
November’s strike shone a bright light on the school funding issue. In addition to concerns raised about PPS budgeting, many in our community learned more about the state of Oregon’s inadequate investment in public education. There are various advocacy efforts beginning to take shape so we’re on the lookout for opportunities to help send a unified message to Salem that we need fully funded public education now!
Email your legislators: Please consider sending an email to your state legislators to let them know you are tracking how our state shows up in the next year to fully fund public schools. This 2024 PPS Community Legislative Advocacy Letter Template was drafted by a roundtable of PPS parent leaders trying to find connections and pathways for fully funded schools in Oregon and has some sample messaging you can use. Please feel free to make it your own! You can find the names of your legislators by clicking here.
Donate your kicker: And while it’s not an advocacy opportunity, we also wanted to share an easy way to contribute financially if you have the means to do so. People can opt to donate the entirety of their kicker back to the state and designate that it goes directly into K-12 public education. More info can be found on the State's website.
ONGOING FUNDRAISER: BottleDrop
BottleDrop is the most convenient way to recycle your Oregon beverage containers and an easy way for you to help fundraise for our school! Grab one of the MLC labeled BottleDrop blue bags from the front office at MLC, collect your redeemable containers, then drop them off at one of the BottleDrop bag collection points. Contact Adam Perryman with questions or to get more bags.

TOURS AND ENROLLMENT
MLC Tours for Interested Students & Families
Exploring school options to determine the best fit for a student can be both exciting and anxiety producing. We believe getting to actually see the surrounding location and have a guided tour of the building can be very helpful in this decision-making process. To accommodate the numerous requests for tours, we offer a monthly tour for up to 10 interested families on the second Thursday of each month at 4:00 pm and will last approximately 45-60 minutes.
March 14
April 11
May 9
Please email Benner, our 7-12 counselor to initiate the sign up process or if you have any questions. gbenner@pps.net
When the lottery dates are announced we will also host an evening open house event for families. Please check our website for updates.
