High Standards of Behavior
As a first-year staff member who is learning a great deal each day about our school and its great traditions and close-knit culture, I continue to be impressed by how all our students treat each other and show respect for adults and visitors. Students of all ages are relaxed and comfortable around adults and engage them easily in conversation. They understand the importance of being quiet, reserved, and respectful at assemblies and performances. Our student-athletes demonstrate sportsmanship in practice and competition.
I was so proud of the respectful, attentive student behavior at the recent dedication of “The George,” as we all packed inside the new gym to celebrate its grand opening. The greetings, hugs, and high fives I often receive from students are always done in good taste and with gentleness and kindness. The rowdiness and stereotypical “attitude” of teenagers I have seen elsewhere has not found its way to George Walton. Let’s keep it that way.
In education circles, we often talk about hard skills (IQ) and soft skills (EQ). Both are important to preparing students for college and life. At GWA, soft skills – how a person deals effectively with other people – has always mattered. This will not change, even as our country and world become increasingly complex and challenging. Preparing our children and grandchildren for lives of purpose and service is central to who we are as a school.
Poise, respect, humility, and service – watchwords to guide the GWA Family now and in the future.

Game On
The Innovation Hub is a space on campus where imagination, hands-on learning and technology lead to the implementation of new concepts. Mr. Gasaway's middle school Robotics 101 class used simple materials to develop unique game boards. Students had to create a game concept then prepare a code to make the game work. They used block code to create their games which required the player to become the conductor to finish the circuit and make the game function. Students had the opportunity to test each other's game boards, sharpen their coding skills and learn about game design and conductivity.
Innovative Flood Prevention
In Mrs. Dickerson's sixth-grade Social Studies class, students were challenged to build a stupa that could withstand flooding due to a monsoon. A stupa is a mound-like Buddhist structure that is typically a place for meditating. To this day, India still frequently experiences heavy floods, landslides, and bank erosions due to monsoons. Students needed to think of ways to add materials around their stupa to prevent the water from entering. They thought of creative ideas such as using sponges, gravel, sand, cotton balls, and popsicle sticks.
Final Four!
Our GWA varsity basketball teams will play in the GIAA Semi-Finals this afternoon at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville! The boys take on LCA at 4:30 p.m. and the girls face Bulloch Academy at 6 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, and $10 for students. Click HERE to pre-purchase tickets. Congratulations to our high school literary team on their outstanding performance at the Region 4AAA Competition Tuesday, February 27. Our team placed third overall, and the following students will be headed to state to compete again at Gordon State College on March 19. Again, congratulations to our literary team and coaches, Angel Grimsley and Corrie Beth Noll.

Rising Stars
Our (fifth grade) Bullpup Band and (sixth and seventh grade) Jr. Bulldog Band members presented their annual Young Persons' Band Concert with a special appearance by the Percussion Theater before today’s lower school Pup Rally. This performance gave our 60+ younger band members a chance to shine as they continue to grow as musicians.
Dooby Dooby Moo
Last Friday, under the direction of lower school music teacher, Kacie Tarbutton, our K3 – K5 students (dressed as ducks, sheep, cows, and pigs) presented their musical “Dooby Dooby Moo” before family, friends and classmates. The crowd enjoyed their high-energy, not to mention, adorable performance!
Art with Heart
Our lower school students have been exploring influential Black artists, both past and present, this month in Mrs. Good’s class. Be sure to check out the vibrant display of work by our K5, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade artists in the 2nd/3rd grade hallway. Each set of art has a quick blurb about what students learned from each artist.
Fun and Friends on the Field
As part of our Read Across America events, seniors and their first graders gathered on the football during Wacky Wednesday to read, play freeze tag, dance and enjoy a snack together. This get together has become a fun, new GWA tradition!
