Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message
Kia Ora e te Whānau
I have been extremely privileged in the last two weeks to have attended the Innovative Schools Summit focusing on at risk students, innovative teaching strategies, innovative school leadership and trauma informed practice. There were thousands of educators and experts in their field. This experience has affirmed that the established practices in our school are focused on supporting our tamariki to thrive and be successful. It also made me grateful to be living in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our tamariki have had numerous exciting and relevant learning experiences over the past 6 weeks from sporting opportunities to trips and beekeeping. It is thanks to our dedicated bunch of staff that our children have the opportunities that they do. We are looking forward to the whānau hui after Easter to identify your child's strengths and successes and where their learning pathway will take them next. Keep an eye out for communication around this.
Below is some information on the new government requirements for one hour a day, in essence this is already happening in a multitude of different ways, but have a read for yourselves.
As always, thanks for your support.

2024 Swimming Sports
On Tuesday 5 March (while the sun was shining) we held our annual senior school swimming sports. The rain may have meant a few races had to be postponed a day or so, but we are so impressed with the students who came along and gave it a good go. The placegetters below all may have the chance to represent our kura at the WPSSA champs next week at Whangarei Intermediate.

Protect against measles
Last year there were 13 cases in New Zealand. We encourage our school community to follow Ministry of Health advice, particularly that the best protection against measles is two doses of the MMR vaccine.
Akonga/Students Corner
The students of the Reo Rua class have been busily creating pictorial illustrations of their Pepeha.
"We have been exploring and embracing our pepeh,. which is your whakapapa, tracing back where you are from. We have drawn our pepeha. People who were not familiar with their pepeha have chosen items such as their national flag to represent their heritage. The pepeha might contain your mountain, river, waka, ocean, marae and iwi. Creating the art has given us opportunities to explore our backgrounds more and learn about our classmates' backgrounds. We can learn who have the same iwi or things in common with us" - Phoebe and Ella
Keeping our students safe when arriving and departing school
Senior leadership and the Board are currently working with the council to establish a safe travel plan. More information will come out in due course.
