SMS Weekly Update
March 8, 2024
Incident Response
This afternoon you received an email about a medical emergency on the Sherwood Middle School campus. We would like to clarify for all that if your student is directly involved in an incident on the SMS campus you would be contacted directly with information about the situation and specifics for your student. Today’s message was to alert the community that we had a medical presence on campus and some students may have witnessed this. Thank you for your partnership in keeping all students at SMS informed and safe.
Student Life at SMS
We have had LOTS of exciting stuff happening here on the SMS campus for all of our students. Recently we had one of our students compete with the High School teams in the FFA (Future Farmers of America) Sectionals for her Beginning Public Speaking competition. She placed first out of over 15 schools and will be moving onto state at the end of the month!!
In addition, we had a handful of our SMS students volunteer to present at the Hawks View Elementary STEM night. It's fantastic that the Hawks View students get to see what STEM opportunities exist beyond elementary school as they move into Middle School and then onto High School.
Lastly, we’ve been trying out opportunities for students to enjoy new games during lunch. We recently introduced ping pong in our activities entrance and the excitement has been apparent. We’re looking forward to continuing to build upon our lunch offerings for students.

Student Life
Dear Archers,
We continue to be so proud of the students that we have here at SMS. As you can see in our Student Life section above our students are showcasing their hard work and skills throughout the community. In addition to all of our recent performances and showcases for student performance it is always a pleasure to see students being successful in all areas of Student Life at SMS.
Continuing on the theme of pride we also take great pride in the community partnerships that we have developed this year. With an increased focus on recognizing and reward positive student behaviors Mrs. Gilmer, Mrs. Smithpeter and Mrs. Weller have all worked hard to develop relationships with local businesses in order to provide rewards for our students. Most of these rewards come in the forms of gift cards to student friendly places in town (Menchies, Handels, Dutch Bros., KFC, etc.). Students have an opportunity to win these prizes through a weekly Bow Buck drawing at lunch time. Bow Bucks are earned by students when staff recognize a positive choice or behavior that a student demonstrates.
Thanks to our community partners and our amazing students here at SMS!

Electronic Report Cards - Starting Tri 2
Hello SSD Families,
The Sherwood School District will provide families with electronic report cards for all students, starting with the report cards for Trimester 2. As we move to this paperless option, report card delivery to all families will default to "paperless-only," and paper report cards will no longer be mailed home.
Additionally, we will be implementing a new platform called ParentSquare to facilitate digital report card delivery. Once grades are finalized, you will receive a secure link by email/text to access your child’s report cards using the ParentSquare website or mobile app. Login instructions will come closer to the report card delivery date. Report cards will also continue to be available through ParentVUE.
If you would prefer to receive a paper copy of your child’s report card, you can opt out of the electronic-only option in your ParentVUE account. For opt-out instructions, please visit our website at https://sherwood.k12.or.us/electronic-report-cards/ or contact your school office for assistance.

State Testing Notice
Oregon's Statewide Assessments in science, mathematics, and English language arts will begin in April for students in grades 3-8.
Scheduled testing will take place during the school day. For additional information on the State Assessments from the Oregon Department of Education, please review the following link.
While no single test can give a complete picture of your child’s progress, statewide tests provide information to students and families, as well as to educators and administrators, about what educational approaches are working and where additional resources are needed. Your child’s participation is important to ensure schools and districts receive the targeted resources they need to help all students succeed. Districts are rated on their participation levels as well as student performance on this exam.
Oregon law (ORS 329.479) permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. If you decide to opt your child out of the math and/or ELA state assessments, please submit the following form to your school front office by Friday, April 12 to best support our school with planning for this year's testing schedule:
Superintendent Search
Superintendent Search - Share Your Feedback With Our School Board!
The SSD Board of Directors is seeking family, staff, and community feedback related to the hiring of the next superintendent for our district.
