Teaching & Learning
February 2023
Happy Valentine's Day
A Message From Shanna
On Feb. 20th, instructional staff will participate in Day 2 of Teacher Clarity and Success Criteria. Since Day 1 in October, collaborative teams have used the Teacher Clarity (TC) playbook to deepen their learning of this process. As we strive to create successful high school graduates, it’s important to gain clarity on effective practices that impact student learning at high levels. As stated in Corwin’s publication PLC+ on p. 42 -
To achieve what they want in the classroom, teachers need clarity – a deep understanding about what to teach and why, how to teach it, and what success looks like. This goes beyond simply being familiar with the day’s lesson. Moreover, it involves an ongoing process that enables teachers both to understand deeply themselves what is to be learned and to communicate those same aspects to their students in student-friendly language.
This work with Teacher Clarity (TC) and Success Criteria (SC) is the foundation of MTSS in that it involves Tier 1, core, instruction designed for ALL students. The work of TC & SC will be a journey, not something that will be completed in two or three inservice days. The learning and doing facilitated during inservice days will lead us to an approach to teaching that intentionally focuses on the learning impact for every student every day in every classroom. Check out the flyer for details about Feb. 20th’s inservice.

recognition/shout out!
read&write technology student of the month for January 2023
Issac Pfannenstiel is the Read&Write Technology Student of the month for January. Read&Write is an app or extension that provides text-to-speech, speech-to-text, vocabulary support builders, highlighting of important information, screen masking and many more tools that provide students with options to enhance their learning opportunities. Issac uses the speech-to-text, word prediction and text-to-speech features to aide him with his reading and writing tasks.
If you would like to look at an overview of how Read&Write works for IPAD see the link below.
New to Read&Write Awards: AMAZING teachers implementing Read&Write!
Kelly Ackerman and Lisa Renz, both teachers at Hays High School have been introducing Read
and Write to all of their classes and inviting other teachers to begin their own use with Read
and Write. They are helping all students understand how beneficial technology tools can be by
removing potential barriers and how accessing the curriculum through technology helps
students become more independent!
Pamela Grizzell, teacher at Roosevelt Elementary introduced Read and Write to her second
graders. She has them do their writing assignments with the featured keyboard using speech
to text and prediction to aide her students in using longer sentence structures and larger
vocabulary words.
Nicole Martin, technology teacher at Roosevelt Elementary introduced Read and Write to all
5th grade students. This has allowed all students who choose to use the tools and features the
ability to access and participate in their curriculum to their highest potential!

State Assessments
Students will be assessed in the spring with a summative assessment for ELA, Math, and Science. History Government Social Studies will administer a Classroom-Based Assessment. See this 2022-23 Kansas Assessment Program Overview for specific grade levels and testing windows.
Building Test Coordinators (BTC) have been trained and will now schedule time to train their building staff. The state continues to encourage educators to use the interim assessments available to them, and as a district, you are encouraged to use the interim mini tests as formative assessments targeting the specific standards that will prepare the students for the greatest achievement on the state assessments.
Again, the interim options are tools to aid you in instruction and monitoring student progress and understanding of the standards. It’s been found that classrooms whose teachers used the interims with instruction performed better on the summative assessments compared to those who didn’t. Additional information can be found in the Interim Guide.
If you or your PLC would like assistance in reviewing the interim tests and/or with anything having to do with assessments, please email Shanna, sdinkel@usd489.com, to schedule a time to meet.

The phonics instruction we deliver must be based on our awareness of grade-level reading demands while simultaneously meeting students where they are.
The Phonics Instructional Guide: Multisensory/Multimodal Instruction
Effective and efficient phonics lessons incorporate multimodal instruction. Activities should engage a student’s multiple senses, yet focus on a direct connection to authentic reading and writing experiences.

SeeSaw - New Messenger Feature
Link to Seesaw’s info about the new messaging feature (including short videos).
The "one app" piece still requires you to sign out as a "teacher" and sign in as a "student" to see things in the class Marie and Allison made (on cell phone or iPad). But the rest of that part about the updated app is still correct.
SeeSaw and Canvas Teaching and Learning Page
A Teaching and Learning SeeSaw (elementary) and Canvas (secondary) page has been created and shared with teachers throughout the district. The goal for creating these courses is to share resources, dates, and general information in a one-stop-shop method. In the course you will find a calendar with PD dates, assessment windows, days off, early releases, etc. You will also find resource folders/modules with several tutorials or info for FastBridge, eduCLIMBER, ELA, Math, Progress Monitoring, and more. If there is anything you would like to see added to this page let Allison or Marie know.
