A Message from the Administrative Team
Greenwood Students and Families:
SAVE THE DATE: The 2nd annual Greenwood Spring Showcase will occur on Thursday, March 30 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. This event will “showcase” student projects, performances, and fine art displays as a way to celebrate the talented students at Greenwood. This concept is similar to the old-fashioned open house. We will have performances, demonstrations, and “showcase” the wonderful talents of our students and teachers. Classrooms will be open with work displayed.
Reminder: Contracts for 2023-24 for current students will be distributed in late March or early April. All families should anticipate an increase in tuition (approximately 5%) and some fees will increase as well.
Cafeteria renovations phase I is underway! We are still raising funds for this project, if you are interested in naming opportunities for the cafeteria, please contact the administration.
We hope everyone has a restful and relaxing spring break!
Go Blue Jays!

Sustainability Walk
The high school and 8th grade art classes walked MSU campus looking for signs of sustainability.
They spotted solar panels, bike paths, recycling containers, LED light bulbs and trees. They visited the MSU community garden and listened to senior Will Chenevert talk about the composting set up.
Earthquake Relief and Benzer Family
One of our Greenwood family members has been tragically impacted by the earthquake in Turkey. Fatih Benzer has lost numerous cousins, including teens and young children in the earthquake. Others that did survive are now homeless and working to relocate. Many have asked if there is anything that Greenwood family can do to help. We’ve spoken with Didem and she has provided two options for support. There is a very reputable organization in Turkey. Donating through this link will help all people affected by the earthquake. https://ahbap.org/disasters-turkey
The second option is to send money directly to Fatih’s brother to support the ones who have been relocated. Jennifer Agnew will collect donations and pass them on to Fatih and Didem to send via Western Union. Jennifer can accept payments via Venmo @Jennifer-Agnew-7. Her phone number is 417-844-4808. We want to send this quickly to have the biggest impact. If you do not Venmo, contact Jennifer for another form of payment.
Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Jennifer Grace by Heath Jeffreys
Ms. Grace, everyone’s favorite K-12 art teacher, started teaching in 2011. She spent one year at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, then transferred to Memphis College of Art for her Bachelor of Fine Arts. For her Master of Arts, she attended Webster University in St. Louis and is currently attending MSU to get her Master in Art Education. When she was attending Webster University, she taught classes during the day, much like she does now.
Before coming to Greenwood, she taught at The Summit Prep because they needed an art teacher and her undergraduate degree is in sculpture and painting. She taught beginners' art (starting with kids as young as three years old) all the way through seniors. She chose to teach art due to a high school art teacher she had, Mr. Craven, who pushed her to always do her best and encouraged her to create art: “I painted pretty things like flowers and did copies of ballerina pastels, and Mr. Craven told me that was all nice and good, but he said I should make art about things that mattered and that were from my experience.” Ms. Grace says that is still great advice - always be true to yourself.
Ms. Grace came to Greenwood seven years ago where she originally taught science to K-4th the first year and then K-5th the second. Both of her sons had transferred to Greenwood and Dr. Bonebrake told her the elementary science teacher was leaving, so she applied. She is also an alum of GLS.
When asked what she liked most about Greenwood, she said that she likes that she is able to include diversity and inclusion through artists and art movements in her curriculum and that she can teach K-12. She also enjoys the fact that it is a small school with amazing students. Her advice to Greenwood students is “To be filled with loving-kindness, compassion, and empathy for others and for yourself.”
Teacher Spotlight by Paul Weeks
When students think of science, they think of tedious note taking about information they’ll have to memorize for their next standardized test. Luckily for Greenwood middle school students, they don’t have to deal with that unfortunate reality with their science instructor, Mrs. Fearing.
Mrs. Corey Fearing was born in Springfield, Missouri on November 27, 1971. Mrs. Fearing graduated from Kickapoo High School and received a bachelors degree from Missouri State University, and her master’s degree from Drury. Mrs. Fearing has wanted to be an educator since she was a little girl, her goal was to bring excitement and creativity into the class room in order for her students to absorb knowledge and find their passion for learning and higher education. Mrs. Fearing has taught at Study Middle School, Missouri State, and has decided to settle down at Greenwood.
Mrs. Fearing has found Greenwood to be an educator’s dream, a few reasons for this is because we don’t have to take standardized state tests, which allows her to get her students excited about science with her unique teaching style and different creative projects that she supervises over the school year. Not having to have her students take standardized state tests is a big deal for Mrs. Fearing because standardized testing takes creativeness out of teaching and puts more emphasis on memorization based skills for a state issued test; the information for the test will most likely be forgotten after the students complete their exam. Mrs. Fearing has no plans to leave the environment and culture that Greenwood provides, and she will continue to teach science and get students excited about learning and further their higher education.
ELEMENTARY MUSIC STUDENTS PERFORM FOR THE GREENWOOD SHOWCASE
The Greenwood showcase is Thursday, March 30 from 6:00-7:30.
The Ukulele Club will be performing from 6:30-6:45.
We would like to ask students in grades 3,4,5 that study piano or another instrument
to share that evening as well from 6:45-7:30.
If your child would like to perform, please email Mrs. Garrison
jgarrison@missouristate.edu before spring break.
Please include your child's instrument and the name of their piece.
This will help us put together a schedule for the evening.
Thanks for your help.
Teacher Spotlight: Allyson McCall
Greenwood Laboratory School was searching for a highly qualified fitness teacher when they came across Allyson McCall. McCall was raised in Kansas and moved to Springfield in the middle of her 8th-grade school year. She attended Kickapoo High School. Mrs. McCall's husband is a retired military personnel, so McCall spent time studying at many different colleges. However, she completed her Exercise, Science, and Kinesiology degree at Missouri State University. Allyson McCall was the perfect candidate for the next best instructor at Greenwood.
When Mrs. McCall first attended college, she studied early childhood development and elementary education. She planned to teach kindergarten, but her path changed, and now she teaches competitive fitness at Greenwood Laboratory at the high school level. She also has a personal training and group fitness business at a local private gym, which she highly enjoys. She teaches the importance of fitness, techniques, and health.
Many people know that Mrs. McCall enjoys fitness and health, but there are many other fascinating things about her. She enjoys spending time by any water, but the beach is her favorite. However, when she's at home, she enjoys picking up a good book and will read just about anything. Currently, she is reading Kristin Hannah's work. Additionally she has been married to her husband Doug for 30 years, and they have two children together, Emma and Owen. She used to enjoy watching her children play sports, but since they have outgrown sports, oftentimes she finds herself at Greenwood sporting events.
Unfortunately, this is Mrs. McCall's last year as a Greenwood faculty member, and her students and coworkers will miss her. She has impacted many lives at Greenwood. Allyson McCall has been a role model, mentor, friend, and coach to many students and faculty members at Greenwood.
