This week's Educator of the Week is the District's Athletic Director, Mr. Billy Battis. Mr. Battis oversees the interscholastic athletic programs at Marshfield High School and he works tirelessly to ensure that each sports program has the support and resources they need to be successful.

Mr. Battis has had a stellar career in the Marshfield Public Schools and has held a variety of positions at MHS. After working as a Social Studies teacher, he became the Department Chair. He eventually moved into one of the two Assistant Principal positions at MHS before becoming the Athletic Director in 2019. He also serves as the Varsity Baseball Coach.

Mr. Battis bleeds green and loves all things Marshfield. He sits on committees when called upon and is seen around campus at any number of events. He has been active on the MHS Principal Search Committee over the past few months and is an active member of the District's PK-12 Leadership Team. When our new teachers have their Summer Educator Academy, Mr. Battis even volunteers to talk about the history and all things Marshfield, as they take a bus tour of the town. And if that wasn't enough, Mr. Battis also works for the Marshfield Police Department as an Officer when called upon in his off-hours.

Mr. Battis is a tremendous Athletic Director, who is respected by his peers across the state. He is a dedicated educator, a mentor and a friend to all. We are so fortunate to have him on our team and he represents all that is good about our District and the Town of Marshfield. Students, faculty, parents and district leaders had a chance this week to meet with two educational leaders who were brought forth as finalists for the MHS Principal's position. After weeks of vetting eighteen candidates and selecting seven of them for initial screening interviews, the MHS Principal Search Committee recommended two candidates as finalists to the Superintendent, who they felt could serve in the role of Principal.

The two Finalists are Mr. Ryan Augusta and Dr. Andrew Stephens.

Mr. Augusta comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Nazarene College, a Master of Education degree from Northeastern University, and additional graduate coursework from Boston University, Framingham State College and Augustana College. He has served as a Teacher of Special Education in Newton, a Vice-Principal in Westport for three years, and has been an Assistant Principal for Student Services in Franklin since 2018.

Dr. Stephens comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University, a Master of Education degree from Johnson State College, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Boston College, and a Doctorate of Education degree from Northeastern University. He has served as a Social Studies Teacher and Assistant Housemaster in Newton, and Assistant Principal in Hull for three years, a Principal in Hull for one year, a Principal in Duxbury for 10 years, and has been the Principal in Lexington since 2017.

Each candidate was able to meet with a variety of focus groups for four "45 minute interviews", before having their final interviews with Superintendent Granatino. A final decision will be made this coming week.

We want to thank the volunteers who stepped up to serve on the Principal Search Committee, which was chaired by Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Ellen Martin. The other Committee members were:

In addition to the MHS Principal Search, Eames Way Elementary is in the middle of their Principal Search Process to find a replacement for longtime Principal, Mr. Campia.

GWS Principal, Karen Hubbard, is chairing this committee and is working with a dedicated team made up of EWS staff, parents and district leaders, to find the best candidates to bring in for consideration. The posting for the position closed last week and the Committee spent this week identifying candidates for initial interviews.

From there, they will vote on finalists to bring forth to the Superintendent, who they feel could serve in the position of Principal. As we did with the High School search process, there will then be focus group interviews with faculty & staff, leadership team & parents/guardians, before the candidates have their final interview with the Superintendent.

The goal is to have a new Principal at the EWS named by the end of April. That person would then take over on July 1, 2023.

MARSHFIELD 2036

AN OPEN INVITATION FOR FOCUS GROUP PARTICIPANTS

In September 2023 we will welcome the Marshfield High School Class of 2036 into kindergarten. What will the world be like when today’s students leave school? What do our schools need to do to assist and prepare our students to be successful students, compassionate individuals, and engaged citizens? These two questions are the motivation behind Marshfield Public Schools’ comprehensive Strategic Planning process: MARSHFIELD 2036. Throughout the spring, the district intends to:

• Engage the Public;

• Create a Clear Vision for Our Schools;

• Establish Action Plans for Realizing that Vision; and

• Focus on Continuous Improvement and Systemic Renewal.

To complete our Strategic Plan, the District has partnered with the Teaching and Learning Alliance (TLA) to facilitate our process. The first phase of MARSHFIELD 2036 will involve a series of Focus Sessions, facilitated by our TLA Consultants, where participants will be given the opportunity to provide suggestions for revising our Educational Philosophy and Goals, as well as identifying future trends and issues that may pose challenges and opportunities for our community, our schools, and our students.

The quality of our Strategic Plan will be directly related to the quality of feedback and participation in the focus sessions. At this time, Marshfield Public Schools is seeking volunteers to participate in one of the focus sessions with our TLA Consultants. Over the years, Marshfield Public Schools’ success has hinged on the broad-based involvement and support of our community. Over the next two weeks, there will also be Focus Groups for our Faculty & Staff, MHS Students, District Leadership & the School Committee. An invitation to serve on the Strategic Plan Working Group will also be sent out soon. The work of that group will begin in the last week of April and run through the middle of June.

If you are unable to attend the focus sessions, please note that a survey will be forthcoming, which will provide you another opportunity to share your feedback regarding the Marshfield Public Schools. On Monday, April 24, 2023, Marshfield will hold its Annual Town Meeting. The event will begin at 7:00 PM in the MHS Auditorium. Beyond the MPSD FY24 budget, there will be a few capital articles related to our schools as well as the article that pertains to the District potentially becoming a member of the South Shore Regional Vocational Technical High School (SSRVTHS).

Currently there are eight districts that make up the SSRVTHS; Abington, Cohasset, Hanover, Hanson, Norwell, Rockland, Scituate & Whitman. Beyond a positive vote at our ATM, the article for us to become a new member has to pass in at least six of the town meetings of the current member towns. If that occurs, we would become an active member beginning in the 2024-25 school year. There will be additional information presented at the ATM on this article.
