Edition 1- Welcome to the 4-H program
Welcome to the Dakota County 4-H program!
We hope you find this resource helpful for navigating the program.
What is a 4-H Club and what will happen at 4-H club meetings?
What's a 4-H club?
Most 4-H'ers join a local club at some point. Clubs are fun, regular gatherings where they:
- Make friends
- Find help with their 4-H projects
- Find leadership opportunities
- Take part in culturally-specific activities and other activities and events
Clubs offer
- Small-group learning
- Caring adult volunteer leaders who are screened, trained and guided by local University of Minnesota staff
- Grounding in research-backed curriculum and best practices for nonformal learning
- Support to help you dive deep into project learning

Who manages clubs? Can I be a leader?
In 4-H you will learn the 4-H pledge
What can you do in 4-H? 4-H is a chance to sample different interest areas through projects
Grade K-2 members are considered Cloverbuds. A Cloverbud is a 4-H member who is in kindergarten through second grade. Cloverbuds explore and learn by doing fun activities, guided by adult volunteers. Cloverbud members have the opportunity to participate in day camps, county fair, cloverbud workshop days, club opportunities and much more! Cloverbud programs are age appropriate and non competitive. In cloverbuds we focus on developing life skills through the experiential learning cycle.
Grade 3 through one year post high school members are able to dive deeper into project areas. We believe that kids learn best by doing. That's why all 4-H'ers do hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture and civic engagement. We give them a positive learning environment and guidance from adult mentors. We encourage them to take leadership roles. Kids can concentrate on one project area or they can try as many as they like. 4-H members in grades 3+ have the opportunity to participate in all 4-H activities and as they get older take on various leadership opportunities.
