SCHOOL BUS RULES TO ENSURE SAFETY
Dear Parents of Students Riding School Buses:
In order to ensure safe transportation for all children riding District #109 school buses, it is necessary that the students adhere to certain standards of proper behavior while they are on the bus. For this reason, this letter is given to all families whose children are transported by school bus to our school district. We ask that all families take some time to discuss these rules with their children and emphasize the importance of abiding by such rules for the safety of all passengers on the buses.
All bus riders are required to have school approval to ride the bus. Children who ride the school bus in District #109 are expected to observe the following regulations. The bus company will report rule infractions to school officials. Children are expected to adhere to the following bus regulations:
Children are to keep off the road at all times while waiting for the bus.
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before attempting to enter the bus.
Do not move towards the bus at the school-loading zone until the bus has been brought to a complete stop.
Keep hands, feet, and head inside the bus at all times after entering and until leaving the bus.
Remember that loud talking and laughing or unnecessary confusion diverts the driver’s attention and may result in a serious accident.
Never tamper with the bus or any of its equipment.
Keep books, packages, coats, and all other objects out of the aisles.
Do not throw anything out of the bus windows.
Do not leave your seat while the bus is in motion.
In case of a road emergency, remain on the bus until instructions are given by the bus driver.
Do not ask the driver to stop at places other than the regular bus stops; he/she is not allowed to do this.
No eating or drinking is allowed on the bus at any time.
Positively no glass containers shall be brought on the school bus.
No sharp objects such as knives, screwdrivers, or scissors are allowed on the bus.
No animals shall be transported on the school bus at any time.
No matches, lighters, smoking, or illegal drugs are allowed on the bus.
The bus driver has the authority to seat riders as necessary.
Students may wear a mask on the school bus, but it is not required.
Students must sit in their assigned seats for both the morning and afternoon ride.
Students must remain seated the entire ride.
Following are the most serious types of misconduct; which will result in some type of disciplinary action as indicated below:
Disrespect to driver
Throwing object out of the bus or inside of the bus
Refusing to obey the driver
Throwing objects at the bus
Failure to remain seated
Sticking part of body out the window
Fighting/harassment
Vandalism
Profanity
Smoking, lighting matches
Illegal substances
If your child is reported for any of the above types of misconduct, the following disciplinary actions will be taken:
First Violation: The rules will be reviewed during a conference between the building principal and the child. Parents/Guardians will be notified of the violation by form letter and telephone. A written report will be kept of this and any succeeding violations. Additional disciplinary action may be taken depending on the seriousness of the violation at the discretion of the school principal.
Second Violation: The child may be suspended from riding the bus for a period of up to three (3) days by the nature of the violation. Parents/Guardians will be notified accordingly. Additional disciplinary action may be taken depending on the seriousness of the violation at the discretion of the principal.
Third Violation: The case will be reviewed by the administration with the possible result of suspension from riding the bus for up to ten (10) days. Parents/Guardians will be notified accordingly. Additional disciplinary action may be taken depending on the seriousness of the violation at the discretion of the principal.
