It was another busy week this week, with lots of positive learning experiences occuring in all classrooms. The students are excited to begin PSSA sport and we wish all teams luck for the season. Please remember to follow us on twitter (@BanksmeadowPS) for regular updates and reminders about upcoming events.
School Procedure Reminders
Please find below a few reminders regarding procedures at Banksmeadow Public School.
- Students who arrive at school before the 9am bell rings must remain under the COLA. The asphalt areas around the top building and demountables are out of bounds
- Please adhere to the 'No Stopping' and 'Drop Off Zone' signs in the streets surrounding the school. Rangers sometimes patrol these streets and will issue fines
- If your child is absent from school, please send a note explaining their absence on their return
- If your child arrives late to school, please accompany them to the office to obtain a 'Late Pass'
- If your child needs to leave school early, please visit the office first to obtain an 'Early Leave Pass'
- To ensure the safety of all students, please refrain from driving into the playground at any time. Travel assistance cars for the Support Unit are the only vehicles permitted to drive onto the property
- All students must wear a school hat to school each day
- No pets are permitted to be brought onto the school property. Please wait for your child outside the school fences if you bring dogs or other pets
Second Hand Uniform Sale - Collection
The P&C will be holding a "Second Hand Uniform Sale" in the coming weeks. If you have old school uniforms that you no longer need, please consider donating them so that they can be added to the sale. Donations can be left in the office foyer. Unclaimed items from the Lost Property tub will also be sold at this sale. The date for the sale will be published soon.
Student Banking
The student banking program is now underway. If you are interested in registering your child for student banking, a member from the Commonwealth Bank will be at school on Wednesday 2nd March (2:30pm) and Wednesday 9th March (9:30am) to answer any questions and take new registrations.
Health Care Plans
We are currently updating health care plans for students with specific medical needs. Please check your child's bag for relevant documents that should be filled out and returned to school at your earliest convenience. If your child has medication that is kept at school (e.g. Epipen or Ventolin), please check with the office to ensure these medications are kept up to date.
Cake Stall
At next Saturday's election, the P&C will be holding a cake stall. We are asking for donations of cakes to be brought to school on Friday 26th February. Please leave your cake on the allocated tables in the 6M classroom either before or after school. Alternatively, feel free to bring your cake directly to the stall on Saturday morning. If you are able to volunteer to assist on the day, please contact Sarah Monahas.
FLIP Gym Payment Reminder
Payments for FLIP Gym programs are now due. Please ensure you send notes and money to school with your child to ensure their participation in the program.
Parking on Monday
The zone rugby league and soccer trials will be held on the oval at school next Monday 22nd February. Please be aware that there may be extra vehicles in the streets surrounding the school and parking may be slightly more difficult.
PSSA Sport
PSSA sport starts this Friday and Banksmeadow has students involved in AFL, Softball and Cricket. Each week the PSSA teams are transported, by bus, to play against other school teams at venues dedicated to the sport. We are privileged to be part of the competition and wish all our teams the very best of luck. Please be sure to sign permission notes and pay the weekly bus fee for your child to travel to PSSA venues, otherwise they will not be able to participate. Training will commence this Friday on the school oval from 8:15am.
For further information, including cancellations, changes in routine and game results, follow us on twitter (@BanksmeadowPS) for live updates. Draws for each sport can be found by clicking on the link below.

Zone Swimming Carnival
Notes and payment are now due for those students representing Banksmeadow Public School in next week's ESPSSA Zone Swimming Carnival at Botany Aquatic Centre. Please ensure the note clearly identifies your request for transport arrangements to be made on your behalf if you are unable to arrange transport for your child on this day. Alternatively, you can notify Mr Murphy. Good luck to all our amazing swimmers! Watch this space for results.
ESPSSA Representatives
A big congratulations goes to Caleb (4/5M) who was selected in the ESPSSA Open Boys AFL team this week. This is a fantastic achievement and a first for Banksmeadow Public School as we have never had a Year 5 student selected in an ESPSSA Open AFL team. Well done Caleb! We wish him all the best in his future trials and competitions!
South Sydney High Open Day
An Open Day for students interested in attending South Sydney High School is being held on Saturday 12th March. Please see the flyer at the end of this newsletter for more information.

Dance Representative
Congratulations to Taylise Hodder (Yr 5) who was selected in the NSW Public Schools Dance Ensemble. The selection process for this program is very competitive and we are proud of Taylise for her selection. She will rehearse with the ensemble group, made up of primary school students from other public schools, and will have the opportunity to perform at several events throughout the year. Well done Taylise!
LIBRARY NEWS
Library Lessons and Borrowing
Library lessons began for all classes this week. If you are unsure on which day your child has library, you can check with the class teacher or with Mrs MacDonald. Each week your child will be able to bring a book home from the library to share with you. It is expected that books are returned the following week so that another one can be taken home.
To keep our books from being damaged, books should be transported to and from school in a waterproof bag. You can provide your own bag or school library bags can be purchased from the administration office.
New Library System and Donations
The very old library system is in the process of being replaced with a new system. This process began at the end of 2015 and will take until the end of this term to complete. This may cause some disruption to library and there will be some occasions where returning and borrowing will have to be suspended for a period of time. I will try to keep you updated on this.
Thank you to the people who have donated books to the library. I would ask that if you have books you no longer need, please donate them to a charity, as I will be unable to process any new books for quite a while.
P&C
P&C Email
Please send us your email address if you would like to be on the P&C circulation list.
Garden Working Bee
Friday 26th February after school - weeding the top garden, light duties only!
Second Hand Uniforms
We will be arranging a sale of second hand uniforms in the coming weeks. Details and dates will be published soon. Please leave donations of pre-loved uniforms in the foyer of the office.
New School Hats
A new version of the school hat will be phased in as the current one is phased out. It is the same shape, lighter material and easier to wash and fold. Samples can be found at the school office. Similarly, a new version of the blue sports pants, made from improved material, is being phased in.
Any new updates to uniform is phased in gradually and should be bought as needed, so there's no need to replace items until they are either worn out or grown out of.
Next P&C Meeting
Monday 7th March, 7pm in 6M demountable classroom. Everyone welcome!
