Add this always-available set to your Sora account ASAP
What is NY Reads?
NY Reads is a simultaneous access collection of over 1000, purchased by 30 BOCES regions throughout New York State (so it's no additional cost to you). It's a fantastic resource to show your teachers who may be looking for titles they can share with entire classes. There's quite a mix of fiction and nonfiction, popular and literary canon titles, across all grade levels (and filtered by content access levels).
Why add it? Because these are ALWAYS available (no waiting, no holds)
If you've ever fielded a question from a teacher asking how they can share a title electronically with students or have them listen to a title they assign, or have access to independent reads that don't disappear, this is a fantastic answer for them. Advantages include...
- Many ebook and audiobook titles commonly found in school curricula
- Lots of popular titles as well, both fiction and nonfiction
- Hi-Lo titles
- Read-alongs (similar to TumbleBooks)
- No worries about copyright--EVERYONE can read/listen to their own copy, at the same time
- Teachers can share a direct link to a title in their learning platform--if students have added NY Reads, they can click to get right to the title and check it out
- Titles are assignable by SLS (though they're always available, so assigning isn't necessary, but it might help in those "the dog ate my homework" scenarios)
How do I add it to my Sora platform?
- Make sure you are logged into Sora.
- Click on the 3 lines ("hamburger menu") in the upper right corner of your Sora account.
- Click "Add library" (blue button)
- Type "NY Reads" and select it
- You will have to log in again (schools/districts are in ABC order, find yours and click on it to proceed)
- Once you've added it, it stays there unless you remove it
- Click on the hamburger menu again if you want to switch your view back to the WSWHE SLS collection.
- OverDrive keeps changing how to search multiple collections. As of 11/19, the newest news is to go into the hamburger menu, Click on all settings, and make sure it's set to search all collections simultaneously.
- Need to see it in a video? Click here to watch a screencast!
How can folks see NY Reads titles?
Each user (librarian, teacher, student) has to manually add NY Reads in order to see the collection (just as they may have already added their public library to their profile). Once it's added, it stays there unless the user chooses to remove the access.
