Aliamanu Middle School ---April 2023
Month of the Military Child
With a student population that is approximately 70% military affiliated, we are gearing up to celebrate the Month of the Military Child!
This week, students have the opportunity to decorate a banner expressing support for our military affiliated students during lunch in front of the library.
Beginning Monday, April 10th, students should look near their classroom doors to see if there is a purple hibiscus displayed. A teacher with a hibiscus sign has a military connection and we encourage our students to ask him/her about their experiences.
Monday, April 17th is our Purple Up Day in support of military students, and marks the beginning of our AMS Purple Up Week! On Monday, and until April 21, please have your student wear school appropriate purple to show their support of military affiliated students.
We will take a school picture at recess on Monday, April 17th. Every day that week, students wearing purple are invited to H1, our Transition Center, for a special treat. On Monday and Wednesday our ASACS Counselor and MFLC will also be hosting a fun lunchtime activity.
Please note- the student's shirt must either be purple or the AMS uniform shirt. Any other purple items are encouraged to be worn as well, as long as the meet our school dress code requirements. Student may continue to dress in purple for the remainder of the week, following the same guidelines.
Throughout the month, our Friday PantherVision TV show will host a "question of the day" related to military students. Classes will compete to be the first to call into our hosts with the correct question and the winning callers will get a prize.
Additionally, students are encouraged to bring in a favorite picture or memento from their military life to share with their classmates during Paw Time on Fridays.
Finally, we are putting together a virtual celebration of our military students to be shared during morning announcements on our closed-circuit TV system. If your family is military-affiliated, we'd love a picture of the student and their military family member to display in a special video. Use the form HERE to upload a picture by April 14th. Thank you.
8th Grade promotion pictures, volunteers needed
AMS is partnering with LIfetouch Studios to take promotion pictures of our 8th grade students on April 13th and 14th, during social studies classes. Students will wear their normal AMS uniform to school and will be lent a "graduation" gown for the pictures. (They will NOT be wearing a cap). Please see the attached flier for more information.
To make this event run smoothly, we need PARENT VOLUNTEERS. If you have an hour or two, please sign up HERE to help.

5th Annual Poetry Slam
Mark your calendars for our 5th Annual Poetry Slam! If you haven't attended, this event brings out so many talented students sharing their original poetry. Last year, student work was even published in a book sold through Amazon! This year's slam will take place April 28th from 5-7 pm, and students are already hard at work in their ELA classes writing their poetry.
8th grade celebration and promotion ceremony
The end of the year is rapidly approaching and this means special events for our 7th and 8th graders. For our 8th graders, your student should have received two permission forms with information about their 8th grade celebration AND promotion ceremony.
The celebration will take place on May 25th at the JBPHH Tradewinds Banquet Hall and the promotion ceremony will occur on May 26th at 9:30 am at Radford High School.
If your student has not already submitted their forms and money, please return the attached documents as soon as possible. We want all of our students to be able to celebrate these milestone events!
The lei tradition
A unique Hawaiian tradition is for students to give and receive leis at the end of the promotion ceremony. These leis may be made of real flowers, faux flowers, kukui nuts, candy, or fabric. Many times family members choose to give leis to not only their student, but also their student's friends. Offering a lei to someone is a gesture of affection and support and a way of wishing the student being promoted good luck.
