In Team News . . .
Team Raven:
T-shirts have arrived! Students interested in purchasing a shirt should complete an order form, which is available on the Raven bulletin board outside Mr. Bennice’s classroom. The $15 payment may be paid online in Parent Connect or with cash to Ms. Robin in the front office.
We wanted to sincerely thank you for communicating with us when you have questions or concerns regarding your student. Whether your student has been sick or needing some extra support, we appreciate you reaching out to us.
Please check in with your student to ensure they have supplies and are prepared for class each day. Teachers are sending students back to their lockers if they don’t have their materials and marking them tardy if they aren’t making it back to class before the bell rings. Tardies can accumulate quickly. 1 tardy = a warning, 2 tardies = 1 detention. 3 tardies = 2 detentions. Let’s mitigate the tardies by making sure our kiddos are ready for class.
As always, thank you for your support! Go TEAM SURPRISE!
Team Muir:
Team Muir t-shirts are for sale for $15! Please purchase them online or by paying with cash to Ms. Robin in the front office. Shirts are distributed by Mrs. Daniel. Missing yours? Please check in with Mrs. Daniel in room 104.

In Mears Assessment News . . .
English Language Proficiency Assessment (ACCESS)
ACCESS testing for Mears ELL students takes place during the school day February 1-5. ELL students will complete ACCESS over two separate sessions. ACCESS is given annually in Alaska to K-12 students identified as Academic English Learners. ACCESS is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards and assesses each of the four language domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
Mears 8th graders will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 29. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public. The assessment takes place during the school day, in either the morning or afternoon.
Approximately 200 randomly selected Mears 8th grade students will take the NAEP mathematics or reading assessment. Parents of randomly selected students will receive an email notification from Tara Bivins, the Mears testing coordinator, by the end of January.
The information collected is used for statistical purposes only. While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. Students who participate may request a community service certificate.
More information about NAEP is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parents. Contact Tara Bivins at bivins_tara@asdk12.org or 907-742-6197 if you have any questions.
We are excited that Mears is participating in NAEP. We know that our students will show what our nation’s students know and can do.
