Week 10 Update
It is our goal to provide the most current information possible. Our updates typically are provided on Thursday afternoon. This is being shared on Monday, October 26th and will be edited up until Thursday. So please check back for the most current information.
This is our tenth week of the 2020-2021 school year.
We can currently report that we have had one staff member test positive at K.C. Elementary, one students at the middle school, and one primarily remote student at the high school. We have currently, suspended face-to-face instruction for that specific classroom and contact traced for close contact for those impacted at the middle and high school. In total we have approximately 20 students out that had a potential close contact with these two individuals.
Please rest assured if there are any concerns specific to you or your children that either a building principal or myself will contact you directly.
We continue to follow our return to learn plan and guidance from the health department, the department of education, and other oversight that has been provided.
We are also considering providing an option for our fall high school athletes to avoid close contact as we are heading into post-season play. We are utilizing some of our larger spaces at the high school that allows for students to stay 6 feet apart from one another. Student athletes will continue to report to school as they have in the past, receive help on their work, and be provided supervision. This format however will avoid any close contact as defined by the CDC, which places our healthy athletes at risk for a 14 day quarantine and out of competition.
Please continue to encourage your child to utilize our free breakfast and lunch program for all; it makes your morning easier knowing that breakfast and lunch are already taken care of.
We still remain cautiously optimistic that we can continue our positive trends but need everyone to do their part by doing daily health screeners, keeping sick children home, and following the 3 W's: wear a mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance.
There continues to be a trend of more and more virtual students returning to face-to-face instruction. Our rate of face-to-face students remains relatively the same at slightly less than 90% +/-.
Our goal is to be back in school five days a week; at this time, we continue to review our format and will continue remote Friday on October 30th.Below is a proposed draft calendar for the remainder of 2020 (November and December). Please understand as we are experiencing issues this calendar may be altered.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 989.642.5282.
All the best,
Don Killingbeck, Supt.
The following are lessons learned from this week.
- All good streaks come to an end.
- Data is important in the decision-making process.
- Close contact is a big issue when navigating these situations.
Athletic Department Fundraiser
These water bottles/tumblers come in navy or pink and can be customized with a jersey # or first name on the front and a last name on the back. This keeps others from guessing who's bottle is who's.
Samples are available in the high school office to view. There is a quick turn around on the orders so no waiting for weeks or months to get your order back. All order forms should be turned into the high school office as well.

Sports Results
10/21/20 - V Volleyball @ MLS - L (14-25,24-26, 17-25)
10/22/20 - V Soccer District Final vs. Alma - L (0-4) The boys Soccer season came to an end last night falling short to Alma in the District Final. Cayden Stark had 11 saves in goal But despite having 23 shots our Huskies could not get one past the Alma Keeper. The boys finish the season with a record of 11-4 and a 2nd place finish in both conference and Districts. The coaches want to express how proud we are of all of these boys. In a season with so much uncertainty and change it would have been understandable to quit, but these guys doubled down on their work ethic and dedication to maximize their potential. Congratulations boys on a great season in the most trying of times.
10/22/20 - JV Football vs. Laingsburg - L (6-12) Hemlock struggled to generate offense against a stingy Wolfpack defense and wet field conditions. The lone score was a tough run by Liam Zastrow that gave the huskies the initial lead. A few big plays by Laingsburg swung that game in their favor, and there was too little time for the Huskies to get the game back. Even though the loss stings, the coaching staff is immensely proud of each and every individual player and their dedication to safety and improvement on a daily basis throughout the year. The huskies finished the season with a 3-3 record, but that doesn’t define the team. They came a long way from what the first practice looked like, and big things are expected from this group moving forward. Go Huskies!
10/23/20 - V Football @ Laingsburg - W (50-0) Robet Knapik had 201 yards rushing and 3 TDS, Dylan LaGrow had 110 yards passing with 3 TDS, 6-0 - first undefeated varsity football team through the regular season in Hemlock since 1974.
10/26/20 - V Volleyball Quad @ Garber - L vs. Garber (12-25, 13-25), L vs. Tawas (25-23, 22-25, 13-15), L vs. Gladwin (25-23, 10-25, 7-15)
