May 2017 Newsletter
Introduction
We have had a busy month in May with a lot of activities to wrap up the school year. We have also completed most of our State SBAC testing. We are very proud of our 3rd through 6th grade students who persevered and did their best on these assessments! As we count down the last few days of school, please remember that regular attendance is still very important for students.
Ballet Folklorico at Palmyra
Some of our First and Second grade students entertained parents and students at our Cinco De Mayo Ballet Folklorico performance. Our students also performed at our last ELAC meeting. One of our teachers, Ms. Gonzalez, was their instructor this year. The students had so much fun learning the dances and performing! We look forward to continuing the program next year.
Emergency Preparedness Assemblies
We had visits from the Orange Police Department and the Orange Fire Department to teach students about emergency preparedness. The Orange Police Department emergency dispatcher and McGruff the Crime Dog came to Palmyra to teacher our 2nd and 3rd graders about staying calm in an emergency and calling 911. Our Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classes were visited by the Orange Fire Department. They learned about the fire truck, the gear that the fire fighters wear, and what to do in a fire emergency.
Featured AVID Strategy: College Research Project - By Miss MacDonald
This spring, 6th grade students in Miss MacDonald's class have been diligently working on a culminating AVID project. Students worked in small groups and wrote to the Admissions Departments of colleges all around the country. The colleges sent them information about the school. Students then researched about the requirements to get into college, options for majors, cost of tuition and room and board. They also discovered what the mascot of the school is, campus life activities, school traditions, and famous graduates. After researching and going through the material sent to them by the school, each student wrote their own AVID research report and then worked with their partners to create a board advertising their school. This years 6th graders are the future College Class of 2027!
