From the Assistant Director...
Fall Events, MAP testing, and School Spirit!
Hello CDS!
I hope you had a great weekend, it's hard to believe that it is almost October already! Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, and I know our student council is already hard at work preparing this years Halloween party. Each year I am so impressed with what our students are able to create in a relatively short amount of time, and I am sure this year will be no different!
Grade 9 and 10 students, this week we will be map testing! Please read below for further information regarding the testing browser. Please make sure that you have your laptop fully charged and ready to go! MAP testing is an important tool for measuring student growth and achievement, and is a useful indicator to identify areas in which improvement could be made. This is not a summative assessment, but it is still important that you try your best in order to get the most accurate results!
It has also been incredible seeing our community rally behind our varsity teams for our home games! The environment has been electric, and its great to see teachers, students, and parents supporting our student athletes. Let's keep this energy up all year!
Have a wonderful week everyone. Go Phoenix!
Mr. Ryan
Assistant Director, Cheongna Dalton High School
MAP Testing for Grade 9 and 10 Students
Hi Students,
MAP testing will be taking place next week, 9/23-9/27 during your first 2 HPE blocks and your English block of the week. Unlike in MS, you are required to install a secure browser on your personal computer. Please be sure your computers are fully charged.
Before your first testing session, you must download the secure browser for MAP. Please download the Secure Browser HERE. Please download this browser today or over the weekend.
Even if you have previously downloaded the browser, we recommend you download the most recent update to avoid any issues. Instructions on how to update your NWEA Secure Browser can be found HERE.
If you need help downloading the secure browser then please reach out to Ms. Morris.
Sincerely,
Ms. Montelibano

Making Progress with HS PE!
The Health and Physical Education department is off to an exceptional start this year, and I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable our CDS students are. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to personal growth have already led to numerous successes in just the first month.
Our department is focused on promoting not just physical fitness, but also the overall well-being of our students. We are dedicated to fostering a balanced approach to health, one that includes mental and emotional wellness alongside physical activity. Through a variety of engaging activities, we aim to instill lifelong healthy habits that will serve our students well beyond their school years.
From fitness assessments that help students track their progress to lessons on nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of every student. We encourage active participation, teamwork, and goal-setting, helping students not only improve their physical abilities but also build confidence and resilience.
One of the key focuses this year is on helping students understand the importance of overall fitness, not just for athletic performance but for long-term health. Whether it's through team sports, individual fitness challenges, or classroom discussions on mental health and stress management, we are equipping students with the knowledge and skills to lead healthy, active lives.
Already this month, we’ve seen tremendous progress. Students are showing a heightened sense of self-awareness when it comes to their health choices, actively engaging in fitness routines, and supporting one another in reaching their personal goals. Their dedication and hard work are setting the tone for what promises to be an outstanding year.
We are proud of the strides our students are making and excited to see what more they will achieve as the year unfolds. Our department is committed to continuing this momentum, ensuring that every student feels supported and empowered to take charge of their health and fitness journey.

Population Posters with Mr. Kamminga
CDS students have taken a creative approach to understanding global development trends by designing a large poster that visually correlates total fertility rates with poverty levels from countries of their choosing. The in class formative is part of our unit 2 population and migration, and it compares data from more developed countries (MDCs) and less developed countries (LDCs), illustrating the differences between the two in terms of population growth and economic challenges. The poster shows how nations with higher fertility rates often struggle with poverty, limited access to education, and inadequate healthcare systems, underscoring the complexities of achieving sustainable development. However, as these countries show improvements in systems, their populations decrease.
Students look at the solutions to those challenges, such as education in women, urbanization, contraceptives and improved health care on how those pillars change the standard of living for populations around the globe. On the other side, students can ponder the fertility crisis in Korea and ways to look at that situation.
Introducing - National History Day Club
National History Day (NHD) is an incredible opportunity for students in Korea to engage with history while developing academic and personal skills. Last year, with the theme "Turning Points in History," numerous Cheongna Dalton School (CDS) students participated in NHD Korea. Our school saw remarkable success, with several students winning awards
NHD offers students much more than academic enrichment. It fosters personal growth, confidence, and lasting friendships. As a past participant, I can attest that the process of researching, collaborating, and presenting in front of judges was a transformative experience. I stepped out of my comfort zone, discovered new interests, and forged strong bonds with other participants. The long hours of preparation were all worthwhile when thework was recognized, including being displayed at SIS. Competing at both national and international levels was not only rewarding but also an excellent preparation for future academic and university challenges.
NHD is more than just a contest; it’s a platform for students to grow both academically and personally. It allows participants to shine on a global stage while preparing them for future academic and personal success.

From the cafeteria - Allergy Causing Food Letter
Allergy Causing Food Letter
Dear Parents
학부모님께,
In an effort to improve how we communicate information regarding nutrition and allergies with our community, the CDS Cafeteria team will now be using a numbered system to indicate what ingredients are being used to prepare each meal. This information will be updated every Friday on our schools webpage. This system will help parents and students prepare better in advance, as they will now know beforehand what is being served in each meal at school. Our previous system, where allergy warnings were posted daily in the cafeteria, will no longer be used.
Attached to this message is the image that will be used to reference the different items that are used in each meal served at the school. Each menu item will include one or more numbers, which correspond to a menu item on the image. It is the responsibility of students and parents to check this menu beforehand to determine whether or not a particular meal contains an ingredient that a student is allergic to. If you have any questions, please contact the cafeteria team for further clarification.

Tyler Ryan
