Our first grade class passed 500 math i-Ready lessons and the students voted to celebrate by having an afternoon of dramatic play. They had a post office, a restaurant, a vet and an ice cream store. Lots of creativity was needed to write letters, explain the animals' ailments, record a customer's order, write and create a menu, pay the correct amount, deliver the mail, etc.

Donations wanted

We are currently in need of some clothing for the nurse clinic.

If you have clothes your child has outgrown and are willing to donate them to the SRS health office, it would be greatly appreciated! Specifically, we are in need of pants (stretchy yoga type pants and sweatpants preferred). All sizes would be great, but we are especially in need of boys small and girls large. You can send them in with your child to bring to the school nurse. Thank you very much!

Chapped Lips

‘Tis the season for chapped lips and dry skin! Please feel free to send in chapstick labeled with your child’s initials to keep in desk for easy access and frequent application. Also, please continue to send in refillable water bottles and encourage your child to stay well hydrated throughout the day to help prevent chapped lips and dry skin.

Have a great weekend!

One great way to support your child's reading success from home is to practice learning the 109 Power Words. These words and their derivatives make up HALF of all the words children will likely encounter while reading! The words appear in the order of frequency in written texts. Also, the first 13 words on the list account for more than 25% of words in print. What's more, equipped with these 109 words plus basic phonics knowledge, your student should be able to read 90% of the single-syllable words she encounters in texts- 90%! Being able to quickly recognize these power words is key to becoming a successful reader and writer.

PTO PTO

It's a new year and SRS PTO needs your help

Does your kid love Snow Bowl or Field Day?

The SRS garden and/or our playground?

New to SRS parents (like me) - what about the Kindergarten play date before the school year began?

All of those - and more - are funded by the SRS PTO.

Other schools may ask kids to help with fundraising by selling things - wrapping paper, popcorn, other expensive stuff that nobody actually wants.

SRS intentionally does not ask our kids to sell anything. In exchange, we ask for your donation.

If you're interested in helping to support fun at South River School, the link is

If you know friends or family that would have bought things from your kid and still want to support SRS, send them the donation link.

Personally, my Mom, (grandmother to an SRS student) replied immediately with “no expensive wrapping paper?! I'm in!” along with a donation.

Thank you for everything you do to support your student and the SRS community!

Best,

Danielle Kempe on behalf of SRS PTO
