Weekly Update April 8, 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Dear Families,
We have completed the ELA portion of the Smarter Balanced Assessments, and we are so proud of the way our grade three students approached the task! They put forth their best effort and persevered through challenging items. Our third grade learners will begin the final section of our Smarter Balanced testing during the week of May 2nd, when they will take the math portion of the assessment.
As a reminder, there will be no school on Friday in observance of Good Friday; and then we’ll all have some time to relax and refresh the following week!
Classroom Tidbits:
Preschool- Readers have been working on Letter Tt. They practiced how to make an uppercase and lowercase Tt as well as the letter Tt sound.
Kindergarten- Readers think and react to nonfiction books by talking like an expert, and having nonfiction playdates.
Grade 1-Readers wrapped up their nonfiction reading unit this week, and will focus on the main idea and details of a text.
Grade 2- Readers started in their series book clubs. They focused on keeping track of longer books, while focusing on character development across multiple books in a series.
Grade 3- Readers identified characters' feelings and why they change in a story.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Joey & Andrea

Music News
Hello Memorial Families!
Please find your student’s grade level below to see our April learning expectations!
Preschool Expectations: Students had an animal theme this month! We went “fishing” in the music room pond, sailed in an imaginary boat, and even found animals that made silly sounds on an island! Students were expected to explore vocal sounds, move to music, and play classroom instruments appropriately. Favorite songs included “Fish Alive”, “Our Gallant Ship”, “Charlie Over the Ocean”, and “Here Sits a Monkey”.
Kindergarten Expectations: – This month, kindergarten students began work on a new set of musical opposites - long sounds and short sounds! They are expected to echo clap long and short patterns, create their own long and short patterns, and identify long and short sounds in various songs. Some favorite songs and games this month included “Button You Must Wander”, “Cut the Cake”, and “Billy Billy”. In the attached pictures, you can see Mrs. Lapierre’s class learning the silly group dance/game that goes along with “Billy Billy”!
First Grade Expectations: This month, students were expected to identify high notes and low notes by ear and in writing, in many familiar music class songs like “Doggie Doggie”, “Rain Rain”, and more! When they got comfortable with this skill, they identified the names of the high note and low note as “sol” (pronounced “so”) and “mi” (pronounced “mi”). They are now working on the skill of reading and singing patterns made up of sol and mi on the music staff. They will eventually be expected to independently read and identify various sol and mi patterns.
Second Grade Expectations: This month, students practiced reading, writing, and singing our new solfege note, Re (pronounced “ray”). They found the note in known songs like “Hot Cross Buns” and “Bluebird” as well as a new song called “Closet Key”. They also practiced singing and reading Re with games such as Post Office and Sol-la-mi. In these games, they were expected to read solfege patterns with “re” on the staff, as well as recognizing the correct solfege pattern by ear! Students really enjoyed learning and playing the game that goes along with “Closet Key”, which involves using teamwork and trying to hide a key from the guesser!
Third Grade Expectations: Students are working hard to meet expectations in our recorder program! By the end of our recorder unit, students are expected to have earned at least their “green belt” (level 4) in the recorder karate program! Many students are very close to earning orange or green (levels 3 and 4). When they have met this expectation, they will know how to read and play the notes B, A, G, and E on the treble clef staff and will have mastered at least four songs! Many students will choose to continue on in the program and work all the way towards “black belt”, level 9! I have enjoyed seeing students persevere and strive for excellence as they work their way through!
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

Nurse News
Dear Parent/guardians,
We are seeing an uptick in recent Covid cases and symptoms. If your child presents to the nurse's office with a complaint of the following symptoms, we will most likely be calling to have your child picked up from school and highly recommend testing even if there is no known exposure. Stay home when there are any signs of infectious illness and contact your healthcare provider for further guidance. These symptoms include:
-fever or chills
-cough
-shortness of breath or trouble breathing
-fatigue
-muscle or body aches
-diarrhea
-headache
-new loss of taste and/or smell
-sore throat
-congestion/runny nose
-nausea/vomiting
Please also note that students need to be fever and symptom free for at least 24 hours without use of medication before returning to school. Please consider sending in a doctor’s note if the symptoms are related to seasonal allergies, as May is a terrible month for allergy symptoms. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our school healthy and safe for our students and staff. We also have several Covid test kits remaining, so let us know if you need one!
Thank you,
Nurse Katie and Miss Michelle
