CN Updates (URGENT!)
Free school meals are ending this summer.
Recently, Congress voted AGAINST covering school meal costs as they have done since the start of the pandemic. This means starting in the Fall of 2022, parents/guardians will again be responsible for paying for school meals.
IMPORTANT: If you believe your family meets the income eligibility requirements to qualify for Free or Reduced School Meals, PLEASE fill out the 2021-22 form NOW. The new form for the fall will be available in mid-July. However, filling out the current form now allows a 30-day grace period in the fall, giving you more time to complete it for the 2022-23 school year.
Those who do not qualify for Free/Reduced Meals will be charged. Those who DO qualify should take advantage of Free/Reduced cost option.
Please encourage your student to try new foods, be kind to child nutrition staff, and to be flexible should a last-minute change be required due to the nationwide labor shortage and supply chain issues. We are feeding the future and we appreciate your support!

Recipe to Try at Home
Surprise Smoothies
By Morgan Vander Zee
- 1 cup frozen fruit
- 1/2 to 1 cup surprise vegetable
- a big dollop of yogurt or 1/2 banana for creaminess
- enough liquid to cover the blades (milk, milk substitute, or 100% fruit juice)
You can boost a smoothie with almost any produce! I most recently added some veggies into my husband's diet by adding a cup of celery to our blueberry smoothies (pictured above). He had no idea! The bright blue of the berries masked the color perfectly!
I will say that strawberries and other red/pink fruits sometimes do not mask the color of leafy greens like spinach so well. You may get a funky brownish color. It's still completely edible, it's just not as pretty. If you have a suspicious eater in the house you might be better off with some frozen butternut squash or carrots with reddish berries.
Bonus: You can take this recipe a step further and turn it into a science experiment with your child and use different ingredients to make a variety of colors!
Red raspberries + frozen mango = princess pink smoothie
bananas + spinach + frozen pineapple = "hulk" green smoothie
