The Mustang Minute
Week of May 23rd
FROM THE PRINCIPALS' OFFICES
What an awesome week it has been to be a Mustang! On Thursday, our 3rd grade students made a second visit to BMS for an official "Shadow Day." They spent the morning learning alongside the 4th & 5th graders in their classes, ate lunch and went to recess with their 4th and 5th grade "buddies", and then stayed to watch our second daytime showing of Willy Wonka. There were LOTS of smiles from all of the kids the whole day!
On Wednesday evening, 3rd grade parents and guardians were invited to BMS for an info session and building tour. Thank you to all of the families who were able to make it - it was great to see you! If you were unable to attend just click the link below to view the information you missed, and of course feel free to email Mrs. Franz at tori.franz@gcj2.k12.wi.us for any additional questions. Families of incoming 4th graders are also welcome to schedule a time in June for a face-to-face meeting with Mrs. Franz to discuss their child's transition to BMS and/or to take a building tour.
Lastly, don't forget that tonight is the final showing for "Willy Wonka Jr!" Our students and staff have been working hard for months creating beautiful sets, memorizing lines, learning choreography, and SINGING! We've got a LOT of talent here at Brookwood, folks! We can't wait to see you all there tonight to support our kids!
Have a fantastic weekend Mustangs!

Mental Health Awareness Month: Monday is Motivation Monday!
Research has shown that physical activity can actually improve your mood, increase self esteem, and decrease anxiety and feelings of depression. Here's an idea for a fun family activity to get in some exercise and reap the benefits of physical activity.
Mental Health Matters Walk:
1. Before taking a walk (or doing physical activity) ask your child to do a body check. How are they feeling? What is their body temperature? What is their energy level? This helps your child become more in tune with their body sensations and needs.
2. Start with a brisk walk to release endorphins. Endorphins are naturally occurring chemicals produced by the body to relieve stress and pain.
3. Take a slower lap - noticing things around you (mindfulness) or practice using grounding techniques. Grounding is a self-soothing skill to use when you are having a bad day or dealing with a lot of stress, overwhelming feelings, and/or intense anxiety. Grounding helps keep you in the present and helps reorient you to the here-and-now and to reality. There are many grounding techniques. Sensory grounding is the most common for children.
4. After you take a walk (or do physical activity) ask students to do a body check again and to reevaluate how they feel.
BES: Be Brookwood
Students observed going above and beyond in being kind, being safe, and/or being responsible are issued “BE BROOKWOOD” tickets throughout their school week. Each week we randomly select students from this group and acknowledge them in our morning announcements and in the weekly MUSTANG MINUTE. Help us congratulate the students that were selected this week:

From the Classroom...
What's Happening in Mrs. Garrett's and Mrs. Collin's Classrooms?
Students in 7th/8th grade Photography class collaborated with students in 7th/8th grade Band class to create special photos of this time in their lives. Photography students used the skills they have learned this semester to take photographs of the band students with their instruments. Students took a three part photo series of students holding their instrument, playing their instrument, and a close up of their hands with their instrument. Mrs. Collins shared this quote which is displayed with the photos and was the inspiration for this project: "As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the others for helping others. The beauty of music-making is that you do both simultaneously." Please stop and take a look at this awesome display in the art and music hallway the next time you are in the middle school building!
