I hope you have been enjoying this beautiful weather as we head into May. While the school year has been challenging on many fronts, our students are doing a great job in the classroom. My favorite part of my job is being in the classrooms watching and listening to students engage with the school work and finding their own "light bulb moments".

We will have the school open for kindergarten registration on Wednesday and Thursday between 3:30 - 6:30. Staff will be on hand to answer questions.

At the April 27, 2021 school board meeting, Superintendent Morelock shared that he anticipates, and we are planning for, full day, 5 day a week school for the 2021-2022 academic year. We are very excited to hear this news and are looking forward to the coming school year.

Last week the district emailed to families a survey regarding next school year. The district will be using this information to help prepare for the upcoming school year. Thank you to all who were able to complete the survey.

The foundations for success in the classroom are started at home. One of the most fundamental things you can do at home is to have your child read. Just 15 minutes of reading daily not only makes a difference in students' reading fluency but prepares your child for academic success. Please prioritize reading daily using some of these tips:

• Always have a book on hand - having books available is half of the battle.
• Focus on their interests - any topic that interests your child is great!
• Read out loud together - invite your entire family to participate.
• Make it a routine - your family could have a weekly routine established to help build routine.
• Remove the distractions - turn off or put away electronics devices.
• Ask Questions - Ask your child about what he or she is reading in school or during your home reading time. Try open-ended questions such as, "what do you think the character did that?", "What would you do if you were in that situation?", or "What do you think will happen next?"
  
• Reading beyond books - there are all sorts of options out there to read such as menus, newspaper comics, maps, or greeting cards. The key is to work on reading, regardless of the media.

The district is providing grab-and-go meals that will be available to any students who would like them. These will be sent home with students at the end of their cohort if your family chooses to participate in the meal program. This will include a free lunch and/or breakfast for the following day.

We will not be eating in the classrooms this year.

Each month I will host a virtual "coffee with the principal". (no I won't be having Starbucks delivered to your homes). This will be a very informal chat session where you can ask questions about the school or systems. I hope to see you there.
