STAAR Online Practice Tests:
I know some of you have mentioned wanting to view the STAAR test online, and how it might look for your child! Please click HERE to view an online practice test. We will also be reviewing it in the classroom throughout the year.
Reading:
We will continue learning all about reading poetry! We will practice annotating poems with the steps 6-11 of the annotation process. We will learn about the rest of the steps the following week! Please find the entire annotation process below:
Read it through once. Write any questions that pop into your head.
Circle any words that you do not understand and look them up. Write the definitions on the poem.
Count the number of lines in the poem and number each line.
Mark each stanza with a bracket. Make a note about why those lines are grouped together.
Is there a rhyme scheme? Mark the rhyming pairs.
Look for examples of imagery in the lines and phrases. Illustrate images that stand out.
Underline figurative language, like similes, used within the poem. Think about the meaning of each figurative device and why the poet used it.
Look for sound devices such as onomatopoeia. How does it affect the poem?
Is anything repeated? Why would the poet choose to repeat this?
Who are the characters in this poem?
Reread the poem. If you are still having a hard time understanding the poem, repeat the annotation process!
Writing:
We will be tying in what we learned this week with Text Evidence into writing essays! Students will be expected to produce either an informational or argumentative essay for STAAR. We are going to spend the next couple of weeks going over strategies that will help students create an essay for STAAR purposes!
Math:
We are going to start our multiplication unit! We will begin by reviewing strategies 6 and 7 for basic multiplication. The 7 strategies are:
- Equal Groups
- Repeated Addition
- Arrays
- Strip Diagrams
- Domino
- Number Lines
- Web
Ask your child what strategy they prefer!
We will also be introducing multiplication word problems.
Social Studies:
We are going to be switching back to Social Studies. We will begin learning about the structure of government.
Thank you,
Sabrina Burbridge, Christina Mantica, Katie McCart, Leonor Sanchez, and Emma Thorington
