From the Principal
Good afternoon Panther Families,
We are finally here - it’s the end of the school year! Over the next few weeks we’ll be closing out the school year with culminating events and activities. From hosting 5th grade tours to celebrating our 8th graders at graduation, it’s certain to be an exciting stretch.
In between all of the fun and exciting activities we’ll still be learning and measuring student progress. We completed the MCAS assessments last month and all went well. Student attendance was great and they put in a full effort. Next week we will have our final iReady benchmark assessments on Monday and Wednesday. Our hope is that we can capture the progress they have made over the course of the last school year. This information is also helpful as we prepare for next school year. On Wednesday of next week, we will have our Student of the Trimester Assembly when we recognize students’ academic achievement and growth.
All of our students will have the opportunity to hit the road with their learning this Spring. The 8th graders recently returned from a successful trip to Washington DC. We’re so excited to have this trip back for the first time since Covid-19. Students were very well behaved and the trip ran quite smoothly overall. Our 6th graders and band went to the Worcester Bravehearts today. Luckily the weather held out for them so they can enjoy a ballgame with their peers and teachers. Next week our 7th graders will be heading to Canobie Lake Park for a day of rollercoasters and games. All fun ways to close out time together and celebrate a year of learning.
This is also the time of year that we are welcoming in new 6th graders and saying farewell to our 8th graders. Page Hilltop and Laura White students will be visiting for tours during the next couple of weeks (PH on 6/7 and LAW on 6/13). We’re excited to get to know them and give them the opportunity to explore their new school. 8th graders will have their graduation ceremony this Friday. We’re so proud of them and are looking forward to celebrating with their friends and family. They will also have a semi-formal next week where they can eat and dance with their classmates in a final hurrah!
I hope all of our students and families enjoy the final days of the school year. Have a wonderful summer vacation!
Sincerely,
Bryan Oelerich
Principal

A message from the Technology Department
ALL students coming back to the MS next year or moving onto the HS will KEEP their chromebooks and chargers with them over the summer. Please remind your child that proper care and storage of their device is still their responsibility and that they remain financially responsible for any damages or loss that occurs over this period. If there are any that are in need of repair please ask your child to stop by the front desk and fill out a repair request form.
ALL students that are planning to attend a different School District will be asked to turn their chromebooks and chargers in the last week of school. Students attending a different school district who have not returned their chromebook will be charged the full amount of $200.00 for a replacement.
If you have any outstanding Technology Invoices please try to clear them up before the summer. If you need financial assistance or a payment program we are happy to work with you. If you are unsure if you have any money owed, please feel free to contact either Mrs.Cutter at dcutter@asrsd.org or Erica Crawford at ecrawford@asrsd.org.

Most recent information from the BRYT Network:
We will be wrapping up our BRYT Family Engagement work on June 15.
We have really loved our speaker series work this year, and plan to continue to bring those to you next fall, along with content-related support groups. Stay tuned for that when we are back!
Our Parent Supporting Parent groups (flyer linked) continue weekly through June 15 with the following:
*BIPOC parent support
*Dad's group
*Open group for all
*West Coast-friendly times
As always, these are open to ALL parents of youth who are navigating mental health challenges. The groups are virtual, hosted by a BRYT family engagement specialist via Zoom, and are designed to be a platform for families to support each other. *The purpose of these groups is to give parents an opportunity to give and receive support from each other. PSP groups are not designed to supplement mental health treatment.
BRYT Family Engagement Resource Library (flyer linked) Our BRYT family engagement team creates this resource to save you time in your search for articles, links, and local community resource needs. Recordings of live events will be stored here, including our most recent live events.
Lastly, families-please see our Facebook group for BRYT families: This closed FB group is only for BRYT caregivers. Search 'BRYT FAMILY SUPPORT' on Facebook and ask to be added. BRYT Family Engagement Coordinators manage the group and caregivers will find posts with tips, events, parenting articles, support from other parents, and more.

Wishing you a summer full of restoration and sunshine with family and friends!

Green Team
As we near the end, students are working on putting all of their knowledge together in various end of year projects. We are very impressed with the students' creativity in their work and are seeing the success of a year’s hard work. Be sure to ask your student to share what projects they are working on!
We wanted to remind families that over the Summer you can encourage your students to read, get outside, and rest. For students looking to continue their enrichment throughout the months off, teachers suggest using i-Ready for ELA and Math instruction.
Finally, a huge thank you to all families for the continued support over this school year!
Purple Team
ELA -
6th Grade - Students enjoyed learning many things about life in Sudan through reading A Long Walk to Water while also reviewing many reading and writing skills. We will be wrapping up the year with fables, fairy tales, legends and myths through reader’s theater and other fun activities.
7th Grade - Students are busy finishing their last novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. They are also reviewing skills and wrapping up their writing and vocabulary.
Math -
6th Grade - Students are finishing a candy scaling project where they made candy packages that are 3,4, or 5 larger but still maintain the same proportions as the original design. We will wrap up the year with a review of 6th grade concepts so that students feel confident and ready for 7th grade math.
7th grade - Students identified areas where they would benefit from additional math instruction and practice. We are working to master these student selected areas and seeing increased confidence and mastery. Next, we will be using the jigsaw classroom approach to review skills from throughout the year. In this approach students become the experts on a topic and teach it to their classmates.
Social Studies -
6th Grade - Can you smell the sweet aromatic scent of Chocolate? This staple currency and ceremonial drink cultivated from the Cacao pod was central to the Aztec Empire who called it Xocolatl. Other than the Aztec Empire, 6th grade students will finish up the year in Mesoamerican studying the advanced civilization of the Maya around the Yucatan Peninsula and modern day Guatemala. Many in-class projects are scheduled to ensure students remain engaged and reinforce comprehension. Shout out to Purple Team 6th graders who have demonstrated the ability to think, write, and research like young historians! They're ready for 7th grade!
7th Grade - Kon-ni-chiwa! (Hello in Japanese). 7th grade students will finish off world history by studying Japan and the Far East. We will examine the warrior class known as the Samurai and how they dominated the Japanese government for nearly 700 years. Also, we will look at more contemporary issues such as Japanese involvement in WWII as well as the cultural aspects that have influenced American society for example: technology, pop-culture, media, music, and everyone’s favorite, Japanese Cuisine. Students will not have world history again for another 3 years so soak this all up like a sponge!
Science -
6th Grade - We just wrapped up our exploration of body systems after a heated campaign and virus battle. Now we are investigating the concepts of mass, volume, and density, and conducting some great experiments using some fun scientific tools.
7th Grade - We recently wrapped up our study of potential and kinetic energy. The students made some exciting paper roller coasters that sent marbles on a good ride! Now we are learning about heat transfer and experimenting with different ways to toast marshmallows. We will end the year with projects incorporating that knowledge to build penguin houses.Blue Team
7th Grade just finished Where the Red Fern Grows. After discussing and reviewing this novel, we will spend the final weeks working on a choice unit around a new book and/or creative writing.
8th Grade will continue A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, or “The Body” until graduation.
Have a most excellent summer! :)
Math -
The third and final i-ready math diagnostic is scheduled for June 14th. Please encourage your child to do their best on this assessment.
All classes are working on an end-of-year project to showcase topics learned during the third trimester. It’s been great seeing students’ growth in math. I’ve enjoyed working with them.
Have a wonderful summer!!
Science -
Scientists are finishing the year with a study of thermal energy and heat. The final project is called” Save the Penguins”. Scientists will be given various materials to create an igloo that will prevent as much heat loss as possible.
Social Studies -
7th Grade- We will be ending the year with a trip to the land of the rising sun. We will look at Japanese culture, traditions, geography, and society.
World Language -
8th grade - En la clase de español . . . we are wrapping up with our final vocabulary unit - ¿Adónde vas? Students will learn how to describe places in the community and what activities are done there. We will also be learning our last irregular verb - IR. Students will be able to talk about where they go, with whom, and when! As we end the school year, this is a perfect segue to where students are headed and what they may be doing this summer.
Special Education -
We’ve had a great year with an amazing group of students. They will definitely be missed next year. We wish you and them a great summer!
8th Grade- We will be finishing the year with County/Local governments and the Bill of Rights.
Maroon Team
The 8th graders just returned from Washington D.C. where they got to see the White House, tour the Capitol building, saw many memorials, the Smithsonians and dine and dance as they sailed around Inner Harbor. It was a wonderful experience and we were so happy to be able to return to D.C. I want to thank the PTO and ASEF as well as everyone who donated to the scholarship fund for the immense support, allowing all students who wanted to go on the trip to be able to, regardless of cost. Without you, I wouldn't be able to say that. Thank you!! In civics we are ending the year learning the most effective form of civic engagement in our community and all students will take the citizenship test to see how they'd do- just for fun! Thank you for a wonderful year!

Academic Support students are perfecting their reading comprehension and writing skills with articles of their choice.
In ELA students are showing their creativity by creating a final project on our class novel in verse, Brown Girl Dreaming. Students are considering how certain objects, locations, and symbols represent a chosen theme of the story, and will display that on one of several project choices. During the last few days of school, students will also become authors of their very own books about themselves! Students will use technology to create books that reflect their individual interests, hobbies, and hopes for the future.
In science, students are working hard on their science fair projects. Students have been working individually or in groups of two or three. The science fair is on Wednesday June 14th from 6-7pm in the middle school gym. If you have any questions please let me know. I am looking forward to a great event!
STEM
The final month of STEM class has us presenting our Artemis projects to our classes which continue to show the efforts and talents of many of our students.
With Artemis 1 mission complete we are looking forward to the first crewed flight past the moon in quite some time.
In addition to our projects, we also have students preparing their science fair activities including experiments and engineering projects.
We look forward to seeing what amazing work the students come up with.
