Mission: Empowering ALL Students to be Successful Learners
2023-2024 Theme: Rockin' our Learning!
Lockdown drill
On Thursday, we completed our first Lockdown drill of the year. The district adopted the Standard Response Protocol a few years ago, and we followed that during the drill. Staff prepared the students exceptionally well. Doors were locked, lights were out, and it was completely silent in the building until the "all clear".
For more information on the Standard Response Protocol, check out this one pager. Here is the Spanish version of that document.

Mental Health Awareness Conversations coming soon
The West Bend School District is going to be hosting a series of four mental health awareness conversations. The sessions will start at 5:00 and run until 6:30. Each session will feature a panel of parent, student, and community speakers. The sessions are free and open to the public. They will provide families and community members with useful information and resources to help them support the emotional well-being of someone who may be going through a mental health challenge.
The first conversation will be held at the West Bend School District Office in the lower level Board Room on Wednesday, December 13th.
The topic is: Understanding the Impact of Mental Health on Families
The main theme will be: understanding how an entire family is impacted by a person living with a mental health challenge. We will hear from a family about their experience, supporting their son, who is living with a mental health challenge. They will share their struggles, celebrations, and lessons learned along the way. We will provide an overview of the more common mental health challenges, along with the signs and symptoms. We will also discuss community resources that are available for individuals and families.

KEYS Korner- Musically Speaking
Orchestra- Mr. Erdmann and Mr. Furman
5th Grade - We are working hard to finish preparing for our winter concert on December 13th at 7pm at the WBHS Silver Lining Arts Center! We are preparing a holiday classic, a musical play, and an arrangement of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to be played with the WBHS Chamber Strings. We are working on playing and reading notes on the D and A string as well as reading half and whole notes, which have 2 and 4 beats respectively.
6th Grade - We are working hard to finish preparations for our winter concert on December 13th at 7pm at the WBHS Silver Lining Arts Center! We are preparing a holiday song, a piece about vikings (how fitting that we are the Silverbrook Vikings!), and a mariachi folk song titled "Cielito Lindo" that will be performed side-by-side with the WBHS Chamber Strings. We are exploring new rhythms, such as ties, and new techniques such as tremolo to make our concert come to life.
Choir: Mrs. Ketter and Ms. Kammerer
5th Grade CHOIR-
We are excited to be rehearsing for our December 14th concert. Each of our class sections is divided up into two vocal parts, and we are learning to sing independently while hearing a second part. We are learning the diction for a Spanish carol with lots of rhythmic challenges, in addition to other songs that offer challenges.
6th Grade CHOIR
We have been focusing on the minor scale and melodies using LA as the tonal center. This will be showcased on our December 14th concert, along with other pieces that are helping us develop our musical skills. We even have a really challenging Mozart piece!
WINTER CONCERT: December 14th at the HS Auditorium 6:30
5th grade meets by 5:40
6th grade meets by 5:25
Thank you in advance for making this concert performance a priority for your family.
PRACTICE LOGS ARE DUE DECEMBER 12th. ALL SINGERS should be practicing their songs AT HOME using the Canvas Calendar sound files embedded in the daily plans. LOG your practice reps and turn in the completed form by Dec. 12. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SINGER IS GETTING THIS DONE! It takes only minutes at a time.
Band- Mr. Yahn and Mrs. Konrath
5th Grade Band: 5th graders should all be practicing their instruments at home on page 9 of their book. We are just finishing a graded playing assignment (students chose #23, 24, or 25 of their book to perform for a grade). They also just received their first two pieces of sheet music: Beethoven's Ninth and Let's Go Band! In addition to practicing on their instruments, we have also been working on naming notes on the lines and spaces of the staff and will be having a note naming test very soon! Please encourage your child to practice at home!
6th Grade Band: Congratulations to 6th grade band members on their first concert of the year that took place on November 18! They should be very proud of the progress they have made from the start of the school year. Since the concert, we have started to learn several new pieces of music (Creatures in the Attic and Dragon Dance), have learned new notes to play the Bb concert scale, and have gotten back to students earning belts in Band Karate. All 6th graders should be practicing the songs for their next belt and will get a grade in Skyward for their performance of those songs. Please encourage your child to practice at home!
Silverbrook Artists!
Students in the 6th grade art class created a color wheel one-point perspective cityscape. A few select student art pieces were selected to be on display at the West Bend School District office. Go see the artwork from across the WB school district if you have a few moments. The display will be up until February.

Shoe Drive Fundraiser
FBLA is conducting a shoe drive fundraiser December 4th - 16th to raise funds for their Regional competition in January. FBLA will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes in the box of their house living room.
All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families.
We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money for FBLA, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Please drop shoes in the labeled box in your house’s living room and students will receive 2 Viking Pride stamps for every pair of shoes donated.
Forensics Bootcamp
Forensics is a co-curricular activity in which students perform various public speaking pieces from a variety of categories. The competitive team season will be open to 6th graders, but before that, we are inviting any 6th AND 5th graders who want to learn more to attend a Forensics Bootcamp (club) on the following dates to learn more and to see if it is something you may want to consider joining in the future. Your literacy teacher has sign-up forms to complete if you are interested!

Second Step
Week of 12/4/2023
5th Grade
Unit Description: Growth Mindset & Goal Setting
For the next few weeks, social-emotional learning will focus on helping students develop skills for learning. Students will learn how to pay attention and manage distractions so that they can be focused learners in the classroom. They will work to develop a growth-mindset and to apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
Lesson: The Right Goal for Me
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to set a goal that's right for them. A goal that's right for someone is specific, challenging, doable, and motivating.
Try This at Home: Ask your child what their goal is and how they know it’s right for them. Encourage them to describe why it’s motivating to them. Talk to your child about a goal you reached in the past and why you chose that goal.
6th Grade
Lesson: Responding to Cyberbullying
