Our Mission:
Principal's Message
Monday marks the first day of spring sports as we head into the month of March. March also means students will be registering for their classes for next year. Meetings with students by grade level begin this week. Resources to help with registration, like the course catalog, will be available on the website for easy access. I encourage you to take a moment to look through the course catalog and talk about possible classes of interest and learn about graduation requirements.
We haven't forgotten about our seniors. While 9th, 10th, and 11th graders are working on registration, our seniors will have time to complete their slides for their senior presentation in April. At this point, all seniors should have completed half of their slides. If you have a senior, please check in on their progress and see what they have planned for their presentation. Students need to successfully present in April as a condition of graduation. Speaking of graduation, it is scheduled for June 9th.
If you have further questions about either registration, senior presentations or other questions, please call us in the office (360-398-8111) or email me at dforbes@meridian.wednet.edu.
Go Trojans!
Derek O. Forbes

Meridian Drama Club Production - Emma! March 3rd and 4th

Teacher Feature
David Shick - Math Department
David Shick
Mr. Shick teaches several math classes here at Meridian High School. He’s worked here for 29 years. His favorite thing about teaching at Meridian is the fact that it’s a small school. He had graduated from an enormous high school but he didn’t know more than half of the people he graduated with. Also, since it’s a small school he likes the feeling of autonomy he has. If he taught at a larger school there would be people telling him what he HAD to teach but here he can think of what the students need to know. Mr. Shick chose teaching as his career because he used to coach basketball for about five years, he found that he was a better teacher than coach and it went from there. He also used to coach Track and Field, but at the moment he’s coaching golf and chess. He’s been teaching chess for 25 years. His favorite thing about teaching is that his work is fun for him, he gets to goof off with the students and have fun with them. Mr. Shick wants to share that he is an authentic redneck from Pennsylvania. He also professionally plays poker and fantasy football. He gets paid to do those things. Mr. Shick’s highlight from working at Meridian is hearing from old students and hearing how big of an impact he had on their lives. He would hear that he was the cause of them being able to graduate. He feels that those memories will stay with him for a while.
Students say that their favorite thing about Mr. Shick is that he “always gives multiple opportunities,” “tries to make everything fun,” and “makes the material seem easier.”

National Pancake Day, March 1st
National Pancake Day is celebrated on March 1 this year. A thin flat cake prepared with a batter made from milk, eggs, flour, and oil or butter, the pancake and its variations are found in almost every culture. The first recorded mention of pancakes dates back to ancient Greece and comes from a poet who described warm pancakes in one of his writings. The largest pancake to ever be flipped was in Rochdale, United Kingdom. It measured 16.4 yards and weighed 3 tons.
Request Transcripts Through Parchment
Meridian High School has partnered with parchment.com to fulfill transcript requests for current students and MHS alumni. Transcripts are securely sent electronically to colleges and universities across the nation, resulting in a reduction of lost documents at the financial aid offices. The service is free of charge to current students. Alumni pay a small fee. Please make sure that your intended college accepts electronic transcripts.
Please find the “Order transcripts through Parchment” link under Families & Students/Resources on the MHS website. Current students may call Mrs. Brinkman or Mrs. Waterman to receive their Parchment access code at the MHS office 360-398-8111.
Attendance Information
Being present in class is vital to be successful in school. We want to encourage all of our students to be at school every day! If you are missing school, you are missing out on learning!
