Student Recognition
One constant of this distance learning experience that we hear over and over from our teachers is how proud they are of their students for their hard work and perseverance. We wanted to create a way to acknowledge the work of our students and provide them with a token of our appreciation for their efforts.
Recently we have begun to ask classroom teachers to nominate a student from their classroom to be acknowledged. Part of this acknowledgement includes receiving a book, a card, and letter from the principal. We are now into our second week of this program and will continue to recognize our students throughout the year.
Music News from Mrs. McKennon
This Friday Ukulele Club begins. It’s a free activity to do in our online music program Quaver. You can practice your Ukulele skills by learning and playing chords and melodies at home as slow or fast as you wish. You can earn Ukulele Karate Belts. Also, there will be a Google Meet opportunity Fridays at 2:30 where we can play ukulele together. It will be a fun way for me to see and work with you.
If you would like to sign up, please email Mrs. McKennon mckennona@newberg.k12.or.us or send her a message via CLEVER. You can join any time between now and the end of the year.
If you don’t have access to a ukulele at home right now, please send word of that and we will be able to help make that happen.
Be watching very soon for the start of Guitar Club, Recorder Club and possibly more.
PE News from Mr. Cooke
Dear Families,
I hope you are doing well! I am writing to check in with families regarding participation in online PE.
In order to provide feedback to students and families I am relying on students submitting examples of their work in response to my lessons.
If your child has turned in little to no work, I will have no basis to report a grade and will need to note on their report card that there is little or no evidence of the PE skills being demonstrated.
There is still time to work on these lessons before grades come out. The lessons are all still available to your student and they require just a little work to complete.
Our focus has been on activities and games to keep your child active and to support healthy development and exercise. Many families report that the activities are fun and enjoyable. I encourage you to have your child take part and look forward to engaging with them in online PE.
If you have any questions please contact me by email at cookes@newberg.k12.or.us or through your child’s Seesaw, or Google Classroom account.

Inclement Weather Information from Newberg School District
We want you to know what to expect if we experience snow while students are in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). Since we are already offering our learning experiences online, we will not be calling for any delayed start days this year. Those are primarily to make sure transportation is safe, and aren’t needed for CDL
If we do have a significant snow event, we may need to call a day off from CDL. This may seem strange—however, some staff teach from our buildings, while others have job responsibilities that can only take place on site. We do not want to put staff in danger if weather conditions are severe.
When we call a snow day, we email, text, and call the phone numbers for all parents and staff. (This is a good opportunity to call your school office and update your contact information if anything has changed.) We also post on our website, social media, and with Flashalert (which distributes the information to radio and tv stations). Or you can call our School Closure Information line at (503) 554-5001 to hear the status of our schools in English or Spanish. We make the decision by 5:30 am each morning.
If we return to Limited in Person Learning, or hybrid learning, we may need to call for a late start if the conditions warrant.
Office Hours and Connecting with your Child’s Teacher
All of our instructional staff have established office hours to meet with parents and also to connect with students and their families. Below you will find a link to how you can sign up for a meeting with your child’s teacher.
