Sierra IB News
Each week in the IB News corner we will share information about our IB program here at Sierra. This week we feature another key element of what it means to be an IB learner. Students at Sierra develop their understanding of content and explore concepts through 6 transdisciplinary themes: Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet. These themes serve as the foundation for the six units of inquiry in grade 1st-6th. These units typically last six weeks. Students in Kindergarten participate in four units of inquiry: Who We Are, How We Express Ourselves, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet. These six themes are transdisciplinary in that curriculum is taught across, between, and beyond subjects. For example, a study on plant life in Sharing the Planet crosses over multiple subject areas with inquiries connected to scientific concepts, informational writing, and research, reading of an informational text, comparisons of growth rates and measurement in math, and a study in geography and support of plant growth. How can you help at home?
Ask your child which unit of inquiry is being studied.
Check the class website for more information.
Discuss the unit and concepts with your child.
If you have expertise in the area being studied, and have time to visit the class, ask the teacher if he/she would like you to come to the class to present.
For more information on the six transdisciplinary themes and other elements of our IB program, please check out our Sierra PYP Parent Handbook. If you have additional questions about our IB program, please contact our IB program coordinator, Lisa Johnson, at ljohnson@rocklinusd.org.
