Weekly Wrap-Up #27
Benedict A. Cucinella Elementary School
"There are far, far, better things ahead, than any we leave behind.” ― C.S. Lewis
Week 27: Last week was another great week at Cucinella starting out with a spirit day in honor of Rare Disease Awareness. It was great to see the staff and students alike showing their support for a great cause!
Our Kindergarten team did their final collection of supplies for their "DONATION FROM THE HEART" community project. All in all, the students sorted, counted and packed the donation items, with a grand total of 256 pantry items. Thank you to all Cucinella community members who were able to support us in spreading kindness to our community!
On Friday, March 10th, we celebrated the fourth annual International SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Day at Cucinella by holding our "Whole School Morning Meeting". The five core competencies of SEL include: Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. At BAC, we celebrate SEL every day through our ROCKS program, the implementation of the Responsive Classroom approach, classroom lessons, morning meetings, and many other classroom activities and conversations.
At our Whole School Morning Meeting led by Mrs. McCool and the 5th grade ambassadors, we highlighted this month's character trait, courage, by sharing stories of when students and staff displayed courage in their lives. A fun highlight was when teachers shared awkward photos of themselves from their childhood. The audience then had to guess who they were. It was definitely a courageous act by many staff members! Additionally, Mr. Perruso and Mr. Serfozo acknowledged our "Students of the Month" and spoke about why they were selected.

Washington Township Schools' Referendum Vote- March 14th
It has been the goal of the district through the past few years to address maintenance and technology needs as funds allow, so we are continually improving our facilities and technology. However, there is a growing need across all the schools for significant capital improvements to address the overall safety and climate in our schools and enhance educational spaces to support greater integration of STEM learning opportunities across our curricula.
The state of NJ has approved funding for 40% of the total cost of our $28.8 million referendum. If the referendum does not pass the schools will NOT receive over $11,000,000 in state aid. Furthermore, the items on the project list will eventually need to be addressed whether or not the referendum passes. A successful referendum will save millions of local tax dollars and bring the projects to completion in a timely manner.
On Tuesday, March 14th between 1-8pm, you will have the opportunity to vote on this referendum that will: (1) not increase current taxes; (2) address every priority facility need in our district; and (3) keep our buildings safe and improve our children’s educational experience for years to come.
There are no polling sites in our schools. Vote at your normal polling site, that location is listed on the sample ballot you received in the mail.
We hope we can count on your support!
Sincerely,
Washington Township BOE

Last Chance for 2022-2023 Cucinella Yearbooks!!!
ABSENCE PHONE LINE IS PERMANENTLY SHUT DOWN, USE PICKUP PATROL FOR ABSENCES!
PickUp Patrol has been in effect since early November and we are very happy with the positive feedback we have been receiving from the parent community. As the year progress, we have been slowly integrating all the capabilities this program provides us with.
The next step of integration is we now exclusively use PickUp Patrol for recording your child's absences. Please click here to review how to use the program to record absences.
The absence line which was previously used to record absences has now been disconnected.
Our secretaries and nurse are no longer checking phone messages for absences. This information is now handled exclusively through the PickUp Patrol app. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to integrate this new attendance management system.
All of our parents and guardians should have received a "Welcome" email with details on how to download the app and set up your account. If you have not received an email, please check your SPAM folder. If you can not find the Welcome email, please contact our school secretaries and ask for a new one to be resent.
If you have not downloaded the app or set up your account yet, please do so as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the secretaries, Mrs. Deanna Dargel or Mrs. Boomi Varathrajan.
