Parenting Corner (Bugs and Daffy’s Thanksgiving Road Trip)
This morning when I asked Ms. Howard’s second grade class how many of them were going to be driving a long distance over Thanksgiving break, almost every hand shot upward. According to AAA, they are not alone: an estimated 54 million people are expected to drive 50 miles or more over the next few days. With that being said, I recently heard about a way to make this holiday’s road trip more enjoyable (and screen- free) for families. Looney Tunes has just released a multi-episode podcast called “Bugs and Daffy’s Thanksgiving Road Trip” that is free, clean, and a great way to make your upcoming road trip more enjoyable for everyone! Plus, it’s a good way to help develop those metacognitive reading skills: picturing the text, making predictions, making inferences, etc.
When my sons were young, long car rides could easily turn into a pretty painful experience. My wife and I tried various things to keep them entertained without having to rely on a screen. We listened to plenty of books on tape (yes, I am that old) and on CD; we played traditional road trip games (“I Spy,” license plate game, etc); and bought little travel sized board games (that were fun until pieces went missing). Out of desperation on a road trip to New England, I once bought a harmonica in Connecticut and the noises that squealed from the backseat sounded like livestock in excruciating pain. That. Was. A. Fail.
I hope everyone has a wonderful break with family and friends!
