Grateful November!

By November, everyone is settled into routines, procedures, and expectations of their classes and the school, yet the school is bustling with energy about the excitement of the holidays to come. We were excited to host and honor our Veterans for an assembly on Veterans Day and to announce our deserving Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Heck. Mrs. Bushong organized our Title I Family Game Night and we had an amazing turnout of families and guests.

Thank you to every parent, student, community member, and our faculty for making Horace Mann the place to be in Shawnee!

Counselor's Corner: Ms. Frank Counselor's Corner: Ms. Frank

Hello again from Counselor's Corner! I am having a blast getting to know your children this year. November had many exciting activities as well as a week-long Thanksgiving Break. Horace Mann celebrated Veterans Day in style with a beautiful musical program as well as having a chance to honor our family of Veterans as well. This month our ICAP (Individual Career Academic Planning) focused on Military Careers and our very own, SFC Biffel, from the Army National Guard brought a large Army Truck for our students to climb through and explore. SFC Biffle spent time talking to the children about what a career in the Army National Guard would look like and some of the opportunities he's had.

Super Smart Second Graders

In November, the second graders tried out research projects using non-fiction texts about animals! We each learned about a different animal and used Epic, an online library, to find out interesting facts about our animals.

We have been learning how to add and subtract two-digit numbers using four different methods….our number sense is growing!!!

Third Grade Third Grade

Hopper's Herd and Kroenke's Krew

Our timely third graders have been learning how to tell time to the nearest 5-minutes. Along with the ticking thrills, they have been learning about literary elements in winter wonderland literature. Learning about 'who, what, when, where, and why' has been as thrilling as a sleigh ride in the snow!

Fourth Grade Fourth Grade

Fantastic Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade has been busy learning about fractions and preparing for our mid-year Benchmark Testing. We have also been learning about making inferences and using context clues. We are excited to begin a unit on Holidays Around the World and will be making and sampling Holiday treats from different countries!

Fantastic Fifth Grade

For the month of November, 5th grade wrapped up equivalent/ simplifying fractions and started on a new standard - Geometry! Students have begun working with types of triangles and identifying 3D shapes; faces, edges, and vertices. During ELA (English Language Arts), we have been working on Literary Devices and Literary Elements! We all had a blast going to OKC and listening to the Philharmonic Orchestra! Our Native American students had an awesome time going to the Eagle Aviary, too! Make sure to remind your student to do their best on their HMH Reading tests! We are so excited to reward them by going to the Movie Theater for meeting their goal!

Rockin' Reading - Ms. Anderson (Library), Mrs. Bushong (Reading) Rockin' Reading - Ms. Anderson (Library), Mrs. Bushong (Reading)

Mrs. Bushong

We had a great turn out for our Title One Family Game Night! We had 189 people in attendance. Everyone enjoyed playing games while learning reading and math skills! Playing games is a great way to connect with family and learn at the same time!

Mrs. Anderson

In the library, we've been brushing up on our typing skills to warm our fingers up for testing with the upper three grades. We've also been focusing on story sequence, points of view, and identifying pronouns. Our displays have been Thanksgiving and mummy themed. Several students have found new series to explore!
